Album Review

A pivotal album for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, 1989's Mother's Milk turned the tide and transformed the band from underground funk-rocking rappers to mainstream bad boys with seemingly very little effort. Mother's Milk brought them to MTV, scored them a deal with Warner Brothers, and let both frontman Anthony Kiedis and the ubiquitous Flea get back out into a good groove following the death of co-founding member Hillel Slovak. With a new lineup coalescing around the remaining duo with new drummer Chad Smith and guitarist John Frusciante, and with producer Michael Beinhorn again behind the boards, the band took everything that The Uplift Mofo Party Plan hinted at, and brought it fully to bear for this new venture. If anyone doubted the pulsating power that leapt from the blistering opener, "Good Time Boys," it took only a few bars of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' outrageous, and brilliant, interpretation of the Stevie Wonder classic "Higher Ground" to prove that this new lineup was onto something special. Wrapping up with the aptly titled and truly punked-out "Punk Rock Classic" and the band's own punched-up tribute to "Magic Johnson," Mother's Milk was everything the band had hoped for, and a little more besides. Effortlessly going gold as "Knock Me Down" and "Taste the Pain" careened into the charts, the album not only set the stage for the band's Blood Sugar Sex Magic domination, it also proved that funk never died; it had just swapped skins.

IT'S MY FAVORITE TOO!!!

When founding member and guitarist Hillel Slovak died from a drug overdose, the Chili Peppers were hit hard, really hard. Anthony and Flea had lost their best friend and Jack Irons left the band. It was destined that the band would never find a guitarist with the skill and precision of Slovak, until John Frusciante came. The band was blown away by his talent, and he's been the guitarist ever since (he left the band for One Hot Minute and later returned). Self-proclaimed metal drummer Chad Smith also came to replace Jack Irons. Although the Red Hot Chili Peppers didn't know it at that point, they were about to make the album that would bust them into the mainstream.

As for the album itself, it's incredible! Although it may not be as popular as Blood Sugar Sex Magik or Californication, it still has its share of hits. Anthony's vocals have a ton of variety, from his harmonies to his rapping. John and Chad are also solid on their respective instruments. Flea, however, is absolutely amazing on the bass. From this album on, he never really played slap-bass that much and you have to witness it yourself. Some songs that stand out are "Higher Ground", "Knock Me Down", "Taste the Pain", and "Good Time Boys" (although I personally thought every song on this album is brilliant).

So to make a long story short or if you didn't want to read what I had to say, BUY THIS ALBUM, IT'S AMAZING!!!!!

wow!

one of the greatest bands of all time is finally on itunes, i just hope that all of their work keeps getting added on...but i highly recomend buying all of their albums...you'll be a better person...maybe...

Peppers at their best

This album is a lot of peoples' favorite, mine included. I wore the cassette tape out back in highschool then scratched the CD to death. This is one of the rare albums that I like to listen to in its entirety, so if you're interested, buy the entire thing. The extra tracks make it a good deal.
They have matured personally and musically over the years to be sure, but the pure energy on this album makes it my favorite. Flea at his slap-pop best.
By the way, that god-awful "Butterfly" song a few years ago was a sample of "Pretty Little Ditty". I'm still mad about that....

Biography

Formed: 1983

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Few rock groups of the '80s broke down as many musical barriers and were as original as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Creating an intoxicating new musical style by combining funk and punk rock together (with an explosive stage show, to boot), the Chili Peppers spawned a slew of imitators in their wake, but still managed to be the leaders of the pack by the dawn of the 21st century. The roots of the band lay in a friendship forged by three school chums, Anthony Kiedis, Michael Balzary, and Hillel Slovak,...
