Album Review

On their early EPs Morningwood only suggested the Pixies, since the songs were too anemic and trashy to really hit like that band's best material. It's a different story with the quartet's Capitol debut, where longtime Pixies producer Gil Norton amplifies the basslines and coed vocal dynamics in re-recorded versions of early MW tracks like "Take off Your Clothes" and "New York Girls." (The early "Jetsettermusicletter" is trimmed down to "Jetsetter" here, but still plays off of "Wave of Mutilation.") Norton gives the songs oomph, no doubt. But the fuller sound doesn't hide the sense that Morningwood is writing sexy catch phrases around rhythms that have been heard before. Vocalist Chantal Claret has a lot of sass, but while there are strains of the Gossip's Beth Ditto in her delivery, there's a haughtiness to everything Claret sings that sounds way too affected, like the too-perfect rumples in the togs of the scene-makers at any of New York City's hipster convergences. "Televisor" and "Babysitter" have their kicky buzz built in, and the bright synth-punk of "Nth Degree" is a promising departure. But Morningwood still feels like calculated fluff, even if it's calculated fluff that's mildly fun.

morningwood rocks!

This is an awesome cd. Nth degree, jetsetter, and take off your clothes are great songs. Chantal is a forced to be reckoned with. This band is one that you must see live. Just don't let Chantal see you blushing, she might drag you up on stage with her.

Pretty Damn Good

Ok, to be honest I did not like them right off the bat. But as I went through their songs they grew on me fast. And I did check out the Pixies like one guy said, but the vocals here I just like so, so much better. I would have to recomend this band to many people.

Great band -- good album

I've seen Morningwood live three times, completely by accident -- they opened the show. And my god -- the energy and stage presence of Chantal cannot be overstated. It was awesome.

This album suffers from the common affliction most high energy bands have when they acheive major label status -- overproduction. You can still hear the band's passion and the crispness of their sound, but there's too much bubblegum sonic lipgloss to really get a feel for what these guys are capable of.

So it's no five star classic. What it is is energetic, playful and infectious pop -- and strictly speaking, ain't nothing wrong with that.

Biography

Formed: 2001 in New York, NY

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

New York City's Morningwood brought a delightfully trashy and hedonistic sense of fun to alternative pop/rock in the early 21st century. Led by vocalist Chantal Claret, whose colorful and sexy approach owed much to the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde and the Divinyls' Christina Amphlett, the Big Apple foursome formed in 2001, molding elements of hard rock, punk, new wave, and glam rock into a sex-driven amalgam of sound. Core members Claret and bassist Pedro Yanowitz (an ex-member of the Wallflowers,...
