It's alright but...

I thought that this was a pretty good album considering the price but i wish that they were old recordings rather than just new ones. Old recordings may have a somewhat less quality sound but they sound original rather than these songs which sound like they were recorded in 2003 at some stadium

Met Shaw once in Los Feliz and couldn't help introducing myself. I had heard that he was touchy and unapproachable. Not true; he was fabulous. He asked what my favorite song was and said it was a toss up between "Moonglow" and "La Paloma". He approved. I asked if he really hated working with singers, he said he didn't mind the voices, it was the windbags behind the voices he couldn't stand. Then said, "just kidding".

OK, gang, first, this is one big bargain, however, it's spun my brain into mental gymnastics. First, the musicianship is absolutely tops! My questions are: 1) When was the album recorded? It could be that some old, unreleased masters that were done when Artie had Musicraft Records and kept secret and have been digitilized -- or, 2) is it a variety of air- checks when bands did transconinental feeds from an empty west coast location (Hollywood Palladium?) when it was necessary to make up for the 3-hour time differential -- or was the album recorded today with some of the very best musicians in Hollywood who played via copied arrangements? RCA Victor/Bluebird originals never sounded so good. What a buy!! Thanx to whomever is responsible--terrific job!!!

One of jazz's finest clarinetists, Artie Shaw never seemed fully satisfied with his musical life, constantly breaking up successful bands and running away from success. While Count Basie and Duke Ellington were satisfied to lead just one orchestra during the swing era, and Benny...
