Album Review

For those searching in the ashes of 21st century hip-hop for a semblance of its basement past, the sophomore LP by Dirty South trio Cunninlynguists was an encouraging sign. The generally unheralded crew put together a revisionist type of album in a time of lost innocence for hip-hop (referred to here as "the Ice Age"). The spit and polish of the album are remarkable for a so-called backpacker group, as the tightly packaged tracks touch on the entire emotional gamut (something of an anomaly in hip-hop at the time of its release). The MCs, Kentucky native Deacon the Villain and Florida representative Mr. SOS, display a lyrical deftness and genuine feel for the music rarely seen in the bling-conscious rap of the latter-day era. The bulk of the sound is sculpted by the idiosyncratic ear of Atlanta-based producer Kno, who hits the listener with a variety of soundscapes ranging from the rugged ("The South") to the emotional ("Love Ain't," with a smooth lyrical sample of Classic IV's "Traces") to even the heart-wrenching ("Rain," which lifts a lyrical sample of Elton John's "We All Fall in Love Sometimes"). This is music with both meaning and sincere feeling, as the group tackles everything from politics (on "Dying Nation" and the instrumental opus "War") to disgruntled fast-food workers (the manically perverse "Falling Down"). The lyrical content, always sharp and articulate, is sometimes as powerful as a jab to the windpipe. Dense, self-indulgent, and serious, but not without comic relief, this is a bona fide "end-to-end burner" from an unexpected source. ~ M.F. DiBella, All Music Guide

Top 10 best underground hip hop albums ever

This album is also my personal favorite of Cunninlynguists's. It is less raw than "Will Rap For Food," but is at the same time less melodic than "A Piece of Strange" (their newest album). Southernunderground finds a happy median in between their other two albums, and in this way it achieves its excellence. There is not one track on this album that I skip over when I'm listening to it (which I've constantly been doing since I bought it). My personal favorites (if I had to pick) would be:
1. Seasons (best beat I have ever heard, very reminiscent)
2. Nasty Filthy (great beat and nice chorus, I become happy when this song starts)
3. Doin Alright (very creative and personal, interesting concept)
4. War (the instrumental is a work of art and the lyrical part is also awesome)
5. Old School (I love how creative this song is, and the samples in the chorus are funny also)
6. (because it's so good I need a top 6) Rain (very sad, but great beat and John Elton sample)

This is an amazing album, be sure to buy it.

Top 10 Underground Hip-Hop Albums Ever? More Like Best Underground Hip-Hop Album Ever.

I'm a well seasoned hip-hop listener. I've listened to every classic record from every time period. And yet I'd still call this one my favorite album ever. No the best, or most important album ever, but my personal #1 favorite. Why? Well, this record truly encompasses just about every human emotion/topic in at least one song, and beautifully executes it. Every song, with the exception of 3, Doin Alright, Falling Down, and Sunrise/Sunset, are EXTREMELY good, and those 3 i mentioned are just very good. There are battle raps, (Southernunderground), odes to their home (The South), tales of love (Love Ain't, Rain), Humorous songs (Old School, Nasty Filthy), a chilling song about 9/11 (Appreciation), and political songs (Dying Nation, War). Not to mention, the best song about hip-hop ever created, with a genius metaphor comparing hip-hop to seasons over one of the greatest beats ever produced, her produced by RJD2 (Seasons). Even the intro and interludes are amazing. In conclusion, this album is so unbelieveably good, that everyone who considers themself a fan of hip-hop in the slightest should own this one. Case Closed.

Crazy Melodies

If you don't decide to buy the whole album, at least purchase Seasons (feat. Masta Ace). The music for this track is incredible! I've never heard anything like it.

The progressive Southern duo Cunninlynguists' combination of witty lyrics and edgy production has made them a favorite of underground hip-hop fans. Before they teamed up, Deacon the Villain from Kentucky and Kno from Georgia were already well known among the hip-hop underground for both their skills on the mike and their abilities in the producer's chair. Celph Titled, Tonedeff, and Mr. SOS all made guest...
