Outstanding

by Wolfgangus

While I agree that Haitink's 7th isn't full of revelations, he does do everything right, in particular with regard to tempi: The Vivace is driving and rhythmic, as full of the 'dance' as it should be; his Allegretto is according to Beethoven's own tempi - some conductors think by slowing it down they can draw more blood from it, but this is right on, and plenty blood-soaked; and both the Presto and the Allegro - particularly the latter - are full of visceral excitement. This entire Beethoven cycle is consistently astounding, surely the best in years.

The best thing about this album is the price. There are better versions out there of both works, both in terms of performance and recording. Haitink certainly tries to infuse new life into these pieces and he is mostly successful. The 7th is well played, but nothing revelatory. In the Triple Concerto there are a few problems with intonation from the cello and violin, but Vogt's contribution on piano is wonderful. To my ears the recording is a bit dry, perhaps not helped by the acoustic in the Barbican in London. So, a mixed bag but overall good value.
