iTunes Review

Black Eyes Peas took a quantum leap forward with Elephunk, the album on which the group traded in its purist hip-hop style for an amalgamation of global pop sounds. Newly minted member Fergie provides the group with new energy, applying an R&B hook where needed, but equally able to play the bodacious frontwoman. “Let’s Get Retarded” is a textbook example of a song designed to hook a mass audience, and it’s no surprise that it found a second life when it was reworked as “Let’s Get It Started” and used as the theme song for the 2004 NBA playoffs, and the 2004 Democratic National Convention. In the same vein, “Where Is the Love?” is a perfect fusion of pop and hip-hop, the kind of song that once won a worldwide audience for Will Smith. Despite its corny sentiment, its overtly positive attitude struck a chord when it was released in June of 2003, just a few months after the start of the Iraq war. The Peas continue to specialize in uptempo, danceable hip-hop and club music (“Hey Mama,” “Shut Up,” “The Boogie That Be”) but it's “Sexy” and “Smells Like Funk” that show will.i.am developing a musical vision on par with Wyclef Jean and Kanye West.

Elephunk-A New Beginning

Elephunk is the first album I actually heard about because Fergie had joined the group. The album is rap and they do swear a couple times. Hands Up is a really good start for the album, talking about partying and letting loose. Labor Day is really food because it's fun and wild. Let's Get Retarted is a great song that actually does not make fun of the mentally challenged. Hey Mama is a club song that is great to dance to. Shut Up is really fun even though it's about a bad relationship. Fly Away is fun also. The Boogie That Be is one of the best songs. The Apl Song is about Apl's homeland. Where is the Love is a deep and meaningful song about the war and the cruelty people have. Let's Get It Started is a really great song to dance to. It's energetic and makes you want to lose control. Third Eye is a bonus track about not being able to be lied to or fooled. Over all, the album is AWESOM!!!

ELEPHUNK

OK, This is my favorite album ever! The only bad thing is "Latin Girls" and "Sexy", which I consider filler songs. Besides that, everything is great. I wrote a mini review for each song.

1. "Hands Up"
This could just be one of the album's best tracks. Cool Jazzy Theme but you might not like it at first because I didn't but several months later I gave it another chance and loved it. You can tell it was originally recorded without Fergie and they added her later. 5/5

2. "Labor Day (It's A Holiday)"
A great song for labor day weekends or any other weekend. It has an infectious hook and unlike Hands Up, you'll fall in love with it the first listen but it gets annoying at the end. 4.5/5

3. "Lets Get Retarded"
The unedited version of Lets Get It Started. The only difference except foe lyrics is that they were mixed by different people. This has a more phunky, hip hop beat to it while Started has a more polished, radio-ready sound. 5/5

4. "Hey Mama" featuring Tippa Irie
I like the radio edit you can find on the album Hip Hop Gold better. This is less catchy, more dragged out, and also very explicit. Still, a fun track but download it on the album I mentioned earlier. 3/5

5. "Shut Up"
The second and best single off Elephunk. A great argument song which has a chorus that really shows off Fergie's voice, great verses, a good beat, and a cool orchestra intro. This just might be the best
Black Eyed Peas song ever. 5/5

6. "Smells Like Funk" This song is really funny. It is entirely bout how bad the BEPs smell ex:. "If ya think sumthin' stinks then it must be da Peas". Very jungle-ish beat and catchy chorus. However, they don't pronounce the "n" in Funk, which is an often repeated word in the song, making the song sound very explicit. They're trying to be funny, but... they go to far in that aspect. 3.5/5

7. "Latin Girls" featuring Dante Santiago and Debbie Nova
This song has filler written all over it. There just talking about how much they like "Latin girls, latin girls, girls, girls latin girls, latin girls, latin girls, 'cause latin girls is happenin' girls and happenin' girls in is happenin" but I do like the sampling of jLo's "Love Don't Cost A Thing" 2/5

8. "Sexy" featuring Sergio Mendes (on the piano)
Dumb lyrics, dumb melody, dumb beat. What does that call for? A dumb song. So dumb this could be the second worst song Black Eyed Peas song after "My Humps" If you want a good song with BEP and Sergio Mendes, check out "Mas Que Nada" featuring BEP on Sergio's album "Timeless" 1/5

9. "Fly Away"
The only song on the album co-written by Fergie Ferg. It gets a bad rap for being to poppy, and I guess it is, and a good pop song at that. Fergie sounds beautiful on it. 5/5

10. "The Boogie That Be" featuring John Stephens
This song's got a really funky beat. I don't like it when will.i.am drops an "f-bomb" in the first verse besides that though, it's a really fun song. I love Fergie's solo near the end. 4/5

11. "The Apl Song"
Apl is my favorite pea. This song is about him growing up in Philippines. At the age of 14, he was adopted into USA he just recently visited home where he found out his brother committed suicide "I guess sometimes life messes get you down, on your knees oh brother wish I could have helped you out." That line makes me want to cry each time I hear it. the chorus is sung in Tagalog. Apl is extremly popular now in Philippines now and this was released as a single there and only there and reached number 1 on the Philippines charts. 5/5

12. "Anxiety" featuring Papa Roach
I love this song! everyone gets really anxious sometimes and everyone can relate to this song. It has a cool rock + rap combo with electric guitars and a rock chorus from Papa Roach and great rapping from apl.de.ap
and will.i.am. 5/5

13. "Where Is The Love" featuring Justin Timberlake
This song is amazing and true. everyone knows about this song so why should I describe it. If you never
heard of it, download it! Even your grandparents will like it! I would know! :) 5/5

14. "Let's Get It Started" see track 3

15. "Third Eye"
This song is a fun end to Elephunk. It's a slow jam that states their political opinion.

I hoped your liked my review!
coming soon. Monkey Biz and The Dutchess.

Biography

Formed: 1995 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Hip Hop/Rap

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Positive messages and breakdancing are integral parts of hip-hop culture, but by 1990 those elements had been temporarily eclipsed by the tough gangsta image and bleak but compelling lyrics of West Coast groups like N.W.A. However, despite sharing a zip code, Black Eyed Peas' vision goes beyond the cracked-sidewalk vignettes and sampled gunfire of Los Angeles' gangsta style. The socially conscious group's earliest connections go back to high school, when will.i.am and apl.de.ap were part of Tribal...
