Album Review

20th Century Masters - The Christmas Collection reissues all but one song from the recordings for the Supremes' 1965 holiday record, Merry Christmas, the group's only contribution to the seasonal market. Though none of these tracks were recorded at Motown's studios (only the vocals were), Merry Christmas was one of the label's best Christmas records; Diana Ross' charming innocence brought across the novelties ("Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Twinkle Twinkle Little Me") as well as the sacred tunes ("Born of Mary," "Children's Christmas Song"), and the harmony backing of Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard made the Supremes' version of "White Christmas" the best ever by a rock group. The four bonus tracks bring together Christmas songs from several Motown compilations (Christmas in the City, Never Before Released Masters) as well as the previously unreleased "Noel."

One of my favorite Christmas Albums but...

by Musicrainman

I read in a couple of sources that Mary and Florence did not record the album. After listening it's pretty obvious that the Andantes (Motown's in house background vocalists) were providing the backgrounds on "White Christmas", "Silver Bells" and even "My Favorite Things" among others. The backgrounds sound bland and colorless and they remind me of what was to come with the DRATS (Diana Ross and The Supremes) recordings which were to come later in the decade.

My Favorite Christmas Album...Ever!

I've had this one in different incarnations over the last 30 years, and it still holds up well. The Motown sound is alive and well on this set, and the addition of "Silent Night" with Florence Ballard on lead vocals is also nice. I also like that the backing vocals aren't buried in the mix.

Wow!

This album is a very pleasant surprise! While the recording quality is a bit iffy, the vocals are impressive, particularly in "Silent Night", "Noel", and "White Christmas" (which is probably the best arrangement I've heard, short of the original). "My Favorite Things" was a nice touch, and Rogers & Hammerstein as well as Julie Andrews should be quite proud that it has not been defaced in this arrangement. "My Christmas Tree" is cheesy but sweet, as are "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town". "Joy to the World" was a bit too upbeat for my tastes, but the faster pace makes it more appealing to little children. Overall, the best songs here are "Silent Night", "Noel", and "White Christmas".

Biography

Formed: 1961 in Detroit, MI

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '60s, '70s

The most successful American performers of the 1960s, the Supremes for a time rivaled even the Beatles in terms of red-hot commercial appeal, reeling off five number one singles in a row at one point. Critical revisionism has tended to undervalue the Supremes' accomplishments, categorizing their work...
