Album Review

In December 1997, the Gin Blossoms announced their breakup, and the lines of communication were severed so severely that the band didn't realize their former label was assembling a hits collection, Outside Looking In: The Best Of. The album may not have been compiled with the complete authorization of the band, but that doesn't mean it isn't good or useful. Aside from the live version of "Whitewash," a sap to collectors, this is a tight distillation of the band's two A&M albums, noteworthy for the first album appearance of "Til I Hear It From You." Some might think that a compilation of two albums is stretching the definition of compilation a little bit too much, but that's really just a reflection of the industry in the '90s — two albums and one non-LP single was the end result of a decade's worth of work. Ultimately, Outside Looking In is a good listen, from the hits to the album tracks, and it confirms that the Gin Blossoms were one of the first bands to really carve out the sound later known as adult alternative pop/rock.

Do Not Buy these songs!

the previous reviewer is right. They remastered the songs and they sound aweful compared to the original tracks. its very noticable when you play them next to eachother. Just buy the original tracks from New Miserable Experience and Congratulations...I'm Sorry. I bought one of the songs before reading the reviews and it didn't sound how I remembered it. I listed to the same song on the original album and it sounded soo much better! I rebought the same song- a .99 mistake but worth it.

For the casual fan

As a long time fan of the Gin Blossoms, I have to say that this is only an album for the casual listener. My personal opinion is that the Gin Blossoms albums are to be heard as a complete set. Not having the continuation of a whole album takes away of the vison that the artist had for that particular piece of work. Enjoy the greatest hits if you want just the radio freindly songs, buy the albums if you want to experience the band.

Not bad!

I read everyone elses reviews, yet I saw the cd in the bairgain bin at record and tape traders, and I enjoy it very much, I mean even though the Gin Blossoms might have other hits, this is a solid cd!
