iTunes Review

Summerteeth, Wilco’s third album, teeters between the band’s willingness to make radio-ready pop-rock and its quest for more experimentalism — a quest that led to Wilco’s departure from its label before the release of its next work, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. While not as “out” in tone as Yankee, Summerteeth is often unsettling in its effect. “She’s a Jar” is an emotionally complex sketch of a relationship that’s bookended with a lover’s wishes that the singer not “miss her” and not “hit her.” “I dreamed about killin’ you last night/And it felt all right to me,” the opening lines of “Via Chicago,” are likewise the kind of thing mainstream rock radio doesn’t leap at. At the same time, most of the album’s songs are marked by a dreaminess that’s hard to separate from the dark. Even an apparent hit-single attempt such as “I’m Always in Love” doesn’t make clear whether the title’s state of being is a good thing or not. Summerteeth is ultimately as challenging and rewarding as any album Wilco’s made.

Man, I love Wilco, one of the best "real" bands still out there touring and making albums.

This (imho) is the album to start with, their most accessible, but hinting at the experimentation with organs and drum loops which they maximize in what is widely considered their best album, "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot". "Summerteeth", though, has shorter tunes and "easier" melodies, making it, I think, a more immediately enjoyable listen.

Key tracks: "My Darling" is as good as music gets. "We're Just Friends", "How Do You Fight Loneliness" and "Can't Stand It" are standouts in an album that plays like a Best Of.

the first Wilco album I made a conscious effort to hear

this might explain why it's my favorite Wilco album, times in my life usually translate very readily to albums.
I later realized I knew several tracks from earlier albums as well and quickly dug into the rest of the Wilco catalog which at the time wasn't real deep. I honestly think listening to Wilco in chronological order is the best way to fall in love with each growth and nuance of this band. It also makes some of the more unusual turns they've taken between albums to be more palpable. I would recommend anything Wilco's done as long as you can take it in context w/ the rest of their work.

Wilco rose from the ashes of the seminal roots rockers Uncle Tupelo, who disbanded in 1994.
