iTunes Review
We’ll say it straight: Herb Alpert was as essential a part of the ‘60s music scene as the British Invasion or Motown. The trumpeter’s inventive interweaving of jazz, pop and Latin motifs won him an enormous audience on both sides of the Generation Gap. Whipped Cream & Other Delights (1967) took Alpert and his Tijuana Brass to new commercial heights, boosted by an album cover shot featuring a sexy babe slathered in desert topping. But it was the tunes that kept folks coming back for more. Alpert’s crisp rendition of “A Taste Of Honey” and the New Orleans-inflected title track are the best-known numbers here. Beyond these favorites, the band serves up slow Spanish balladry (“Lemon Tree”), breezy Broadway-style tunes (“Lollipops And Roses”), melancholy rhumbas (“Tangerine”) and Southwestern-seasoned polkas (“Peanuts”) with smooth delivery and a bright finish. As bandleader, Alpert throws in odd arrangement twists and tempo changes while avoiding sonic clutter. If there’s a dash of schmaltz in the salsa, the result is a highly addictive recipe. Whipped Cream & Other Delights sold like hotcakes and helped maintain the Brass’ winning streak through the end of the decade.

Herb's Best Album
I'm glad they finally got the original albums on CD and iTunes. I had to listen to this album on old cassettes, and it's still my favorites. The Grammy-Award Winning A Taste of Honey is a pure classic. My other favorites are Whipped Cream (also known as one of the themes of the Dating Game" and the Stripper-esque version of Love Potion #9 with a powerful sax and honey-tonk piano solo. A must for Herb Alpert fans.
It's Not Just The Cover That's Good...
While the album cover is a classic, the music is just as good. This album put Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass on the map to stay. The songs all have to do with food in one form or another, and the opening song "A Taste Of Honey" is the key ingredient. It's a nice mix of jazz and pop and the song became the Record Of The Year for 1965. "Whipped Cream" and "Lollipops And Roses" were themes on the old Dating Game show. "Butterball" is a nice little Dixieland swinger, and there's a sexy romp on the rockin' "Love Potion #9". Alpert's arranging skills are also a highlight on this album. There's also a couple of bonus tracks included on this reissue. This album should be in everyone's record collection!
The Next Big Step After South Of The Border
Perhaps the best known of the Tijuana Brass albums and building on the strength of South Of The Border, Whipped Cream places Herb Alpert and the TIjuana Brass as a major musical artist of the 1960s decade. The title song and A Taste of Honey are perhaps the most famous songs from this release, but all the songs are good, strong tunes. Continuing to develop the sound and style, these arrangements and songs show the variety and genius that Herb Alpert would bring to popular music.
This is a milestone album and a must have in any Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass collection. A great CD - and there are bonus tracks not on the original release. Get it today!
