iTunes Review

Sibylle Baier, an actress and mother, recorded these songs in secret between 1970 and 1973, and had no intention of ever releasing them. It is only thanks to the efforts of her son that we are now able to hear this exceptional material. Baier’s fragile but assured voice will surely remind many of Vashti Bunyan’s breathless whisper, or of Chan Marshall’s warbling vulnerability, but as tempting these comparisons are, they shortchange Baier’s unique melodic sensibility, and overlook the striking singularity of her lyrical universe. Baier’s lovingly sketched reflections on the mysteries of everyday life are worlds apart from Bunyan’s pastoral fantasies or Marshall’s monster-haunted mythos. In Baier’s hands the simplest of moments, an afternoon drive (“Driving”), a quiet epiphany by the fireplace (“Forget”), or the act of falling asleep (“Give Me A Smile”), are imbued with a wholly unexpected poeticism. Using only her voice and guitar Baier manages to make commonplace experiences burn with an unmatched emotional intensity that makes Colour Green one of the most striking releases of 2006.

After all this time...

Thirty+ years after its creation, This album still sounds modern, eloquent, and haunting. Whether or not you're a folk fan, please give this album a listen. Younger listeners who enjoy artists like Fiest or Bat For Lashes will be able to appreciate Baier's songs. Thi album is purley amazing.

The End

This album is full of great, haunting (an overused word, I know, but it's true) songs, however “The End” is the one I go back to over and over again. What an amazing song! Truly inspired work. Aside from the music itself, it’s interesting to contemplate this lone woman sitting in her home over 30 years ago, recording this very solitary sounding music while the rest of the world went by. I have a feeling that even back then these songs had a poignant air of nostalgia about them, a quality that certainly hasn’t faded decades later.

This collection of recordings is one of the most compelling works I've ever heard in my life! It stands with some of the most notable Guitar/Voice lp's to come from Europe let alone the rest of the world. Very few songwriters can pull off this level of introspection and visceral quality without sounding pretentious. As mentioned in an earlier review, it is simply a matter of time before this becomes well known and legendary.

Years Active: '70s

German singer/songwriter Sibylle Baier's one contribution to the early-'70s underground folk scene was recorded in her home on an old reel-to-reel machine. Her earnest and stoic vocals, as well as her reflective compositions, were comparable to contemporaries such as Nico, Vashti Bunyan, and Anne Briggs,...
