Album Review

Knoc-Turn'al's five-song EP from mid-2002 has an impressive array of guests, but the non-features are just as solid. Featuring contributions from none other than Missy Elliott and Dr. Dre, "The Knoc" is a solid hip-hop player track with a cartoonish production that sounds like an Eminem joint. The next track, "Muzik," is even better, with a flamboyant Kayne West production playing off Knoc-Turn'al's falsetto perfectly on the choruses. Elsewhere, Warren G, Nate Dogg, and Xzibit appear on a remix of "Str8 Westcoast," and Too $hort guests on another highlight, "Cash Sniffin' Noses."

This EP, is sadly all that came from what was otherwise an ingenious marketing campaign involving his appearances on Dr. Dre's Chronic 2001. I can remember when all this was going down, thinking Knoc was the next best thing out of the West Coast scene - and instead he is now relegated to low budget appearances and albums.

This EP is classic, those saying "Muzik" is the only good track need to check hard for "LA Nite-N-Day" and listen to his appearances on "The Wash" soundtrack as well. "The Knoc" with Missy Elliott was in heavy rotation on MTV back in the day, and the video is pretty tight too! His second CD release, "The Way I Am" was pretty good too, a nice representation of the West Coast swag, without Dr. Dre's assistance I might add. Snoop makes an appearance, but the track was better off without him. My favorite cut was "I Like," check it out.

Knoc has an appearance on Crooked I's "Block Obama II" mixtape, dropping Nov. 4th 2008 on iTunes digital store. It's a nice throwback to the old, and I'm hopping he hits it big on Dr. Dre's "Detox" as well. He deserves his shine, because he is one of the brightest lights on the West Coast.

After penning several songs for Dr. Dre, Knoc-Turn'al traded the pen for the microphone. As with most of the artists who begin their career with Dre, Knoc began his performing career in grand fashion: following a few guest raps on Chronic 2001 (1999), he made a big slash with "Bad Intentions," a Dre...
