iTunes Review
By the end of the opening song and title track on Springsteen's first solo acoustic album, Nebraska, we're blown way past glowing images of "broken heroes on a last-chance power drive." The protagonists here are dark, as is the mood; "Nebraska" attempts to explain serial killer Charles Starkweather's rampage from the first-person perspective:"I guess there's just a meanness in this world." Recorded on a four-track machine in Springsteen's kitchen, there are hints here of old country songs and the even older Irish ballads that presaged them. Bruce knows how to set a lyric like the class-conscious "Mansion on the Hill" in a lovely melody that's like something from the Chieftains' dreams. Nebraska is at once a startling addition to the rock and folk traditions, and an affirmation of them. Just ask Johnny Cash, who cut his own versions of "Johnny 99" and "Highway Patrolman."

The Best of the Boss
by WvMEKTwenty seven years later, and it is still Bruce's best work. I remember when it was released, I was blown away. First by the album itself, then by the negative reaction from people who at the time just didn't get it. They couldn't get past the departure from the big E Street Band sound. I'm glad to see so many reviews of this album appreciate the raw unfiltered nature of this album. Even though it was initially recorded as "demo" material for a later release with the E Street Band. If it had been released any other way it wouldn't have had the same impact. You can't go wrong with this one.
Great work
by JWLAI'm a newer Bruce fan but as I started buying all the albums, this one was the toughest to initially get into. But I let it play all the way through a few times and realized what a great piece of music this record is. It can be sad but it's REAL LIFE! "Used Cars" and "My Father's House" are heartbreaking but remind me of things in my life as a kid. Bruce is truly a legend and "Nebraska" is a great piece of his catalog.
Simply Stunning
by golfstudAgree with most reviews, this is one of the must have albums of AMERICAN MUSIC. Period. For a simple demo reel recorded at home, it sure sounds intimate on a good stereo. Some of the best singing and conveying of emotion in recorded music history, those Jersey boys...Sinatra and Springsteen sure can convey human emotion. Atlantic City is the adult version of Thunder Road and just when the darkness wants to be to much, he closes with a Reason to Believe. Both of these tunes would be re-imagined over the years in concert to great effect..showing their power and greatness years later. This is an album to listen to in the dark, just like Sinatra's Only the Lonely a generation before.
