Album Review
Written and recorded in about a week, Jar of Flies solidified Alice in Chains' somewhat bizarre pattern of alternating full-length hard rock albums with mostly acoustic, ballad-oriented EPs. That quirk aside, Jar of Flies is a low-key stunner, achingly gorgeous and harrowingly sorrowful all at once. In a way, it's a logical sequel to Dirt — despite the veneer of calm, the songs' voices still blame only themselves. But where Dirt found catharsis in its unrelenting darkness and depravity, Jar of Flies is about living with the consequences, full of deeply felt reflections on loneliness, self-imposed isolation, and lost human connections. The mood is still hopelessly bleak, but the poignant, introspective tone produces a sense of acceptance that's actually soothing, in a funereal sort of way. Jerry Cantrell's arrangements keep growing more detailed and layered; while there are a few noisy moments, most of Jar of Flies is bathed in a clean, shimmering ambience whose source is difficult to pin down, but is well served by Cantrell's varied guitar tones and even occasional string arrangements. And coming on the heels of Dirt, the restraint and subtlety of Jar of Flies are nothing short of revelatory — though it was written and recorded in about a week, it feels much more crafted and textured than Sap. Perhaps Jar of Flies would have gotten more credit if it had been a full-length album; as it stands, the EP is a leap forward and a major work in the Alice in Chains catalog.
Customer Reviews
Perfect
For an EP album written and recorded in about a week, Jar of Flies is unbelievable. For an EP album period, it is unbelievable.
Rotten Apple: 7 Minutes, not a dull moment, not any skip parts, no good parts just overall greatness.
Nutshell: Perfect. With the simple, but complex sounds you hear, to the perfect vocals, this one is my favorite
I Stay Away: Love the lyrics, love the vocals, love the guitar, love the melody, LOVE THE SONG
No Excuses: Understandable lyrics, and an overall great song. One of the lesser greats, but great nonetheless
Whale & Whasp: Great Instrumental
Don't Follow: Doesn't really sound like AIC but i personally love the song. A definate great ballot
Swing On This: A fun ending to an amazing album.
My favorite AIC album; listen to it all the time. One of the best out there. My favorite album of all time accept Appetite For Destruction by GNR, I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND IT, AND IT IS NO DOUBT WORTH THE 6 DOLLERS WHATEVER.
Anyway, hope this was helpful
Pinnacle
One week. 7 days. That's how long it took AIC to write and record this album. All of their albums are classics to me but this one kind of summed it all up. It made me want to learn to play acoustic guitar. Every song on this album is priceless. Nutshell still gives me goosebumps when I hear Layne sing it. What a classic piece of work. I'd buy a new copy everyday if I had to. If you haven't heard it you must buy it. NOW.
If you don't love Alice in Chains you're friggin crazy...
Layne Stanley’s death was a huge tragedy...
Stanley is the only singer that can make you bask in his emotion. You can feel every pained lyric in your heart... it's amazing. The music of Alice in Chains is perhaps the best ever. Jar of Flies is an excellent album with songs such as I Stay Away and No Excuses. YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY!!!
