iTunes Review
Keith Urban’s Love, Pain & the whole crazy thing was released in November 2006 amidst a blizzard of tabloid stories detailing the singer’s struggles with substance abuse. Once the chatter died down, the album’s music could be considered on its considerable merits alone. In spite (or maybe because of) his personal demons, Urban delivered an exceptional recording that testified to his artistic growth and willingness to take creative risks. His romantic outlaw persona gets full expression in tracks like “Once In A Lifetime,” a buoyant expression of newly-found love. But Urban has more on his mind than just boy-gets-girl scenarios – the shadows hinted at in the album’s title are exposed in such songs as “Used To The Pain” and “Stupid Boy.” Heartache and healing on a larger scale is the theme of “Raise The Roof,” a duet with Ronnie Dunn dealing with Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. The closing track, “Got It Right This Time,” delves into Memphis-style soul in a bare-bones setting, and Urban’s vocals throughout temper his sweet tone with a touch of grit. Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy Thing is potent mix of joy, suffering and hard-won renewal – a reflection of the artist’s own personal journey.
Customer Reviews
This was well worth the wait
I am not a tremendous country fan but Keith Urban is one singer that proves music is universal and knows no boundries. I could listen to this CD all day and never grow tired of it.There is so much depth and passion packed into this release. Even if you are not a country fan,you won't be dissappointed. Good luck Keith and always keep the faith, better times are coming.
New Style, same success
This album has a bit more of a rock feeling to it. There are a few songs that still have the banjo and other country intruments so he does still play to his country roots, especially in "Raise the Barn". I personally like the new style because it shows how his music has evolved and honestly, with his talent at playing the guitar, when he solos it's going to sound rockish anyway and not country. Also he might cross over a little more and get people who don't like country to buy this album. I personally don't put this album ahead of Golden Road quite yet but it's growing on me every second. It has everything you expect from Keith Urban: The passionate, heartfelt lyrics of some songs, the fun, clever lyrics in others and the guitar playing that makes this man a God and so fun to listen to and watch. I highly recommend it!
Keith Urban doesn't disappoint with his "whole crazy thing"
Keith Urban has done it again. This album consists of infectious melodies, rocking guitar licks and touching lyrics. The emphasis is more on the love than the pain, but that can be expected considering he was in the honeymoon phase of his marriage while finishing up this album. Some of the best songs are "I Told You So", "Stupid Boy" and "Faster Car". This is a must have for any country music fan and for anyone who loves a good melody and some catchy songs. If you haven't seen Keith live, then I highly recommend you do in 2007. His live show is amazing, and shows that all of his talent cannot begin to be captured by a studio CD.
