Album Review
On the strength of the hit duet with Aaron Neville, "Don't Know Much," Cry Like a Rainstorm — Howl Like the Wind returned Linda Ronstadt to the top of the charts. The album was a collection of well-constructed adult contemporary pop, which suits her voice better than the traditional pop she recorded during the mid-'80s. Musically, Cry Like a Rainstorm isn't as adventurous as Canciones de Mi Padre, nor is it as consistent as Trio, the album she recorded with Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton, but it is her most satisfying mainstream pop album she has made since the late '70s.

Cry Like a Rainstorm
by Nitewing4205This is a very good album featuring the voice talent of Lind and Aaron Neville. One of the few albums in my collection in which I listen to in its entirety.
Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind
by beegeebeeIn an album of amazing beauty, the most exquisite cuts are "Still Within...," "Shattered," and "Goodbye My Friend." Don't overlook, especially if LOSS has ever entered into your life.
Linda closed the 1980's with a winner--against many odds.
by InXanadu2Linda Ronstadt recorded only three pop-rock albums in the 1980's. Her others were all standards with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra or Spanish albums (not counting the classic TRIO with Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton).
The songs here seem to play it safe, as this album is not as much of a mixed bag as her previous albums--but there are several good tracks to satisfy her older fans--and the younger ones who may not have heard of her until "Somewhere Out There" (with James Ingram) from the 1987 "American Tail" soundtrack. Plus, the timing was perfect as this came out just in time before American radio went in a totally different direction with grunge and gangsta rap looming on the horizon. (It already had to compete with newer 1989 sounds by Soul II Soul, The B-52's, Neneh Cherry, Syd Straw, and Fine Young Cannibals--and still sound fresh.)
For me this album sits right in the middle of her three pop albums from this decade. Her vocals are much better than on "Mad Love" (nine years earlier), but it doesn't pack quite the punch of "Get Closer"--which would be the essential album for me if I had to choose one from the 1980's.
