iTunes Review

Don’t be fooled by Lily Allen’s charming, pixie voice and singsong delivery — this gal’s a firecracker. Armed with a razor wit and a sailor’s vocabulary, she delivers biting lyrics and humorous insults with attitude and sass, and revels in playing the jaded, cynical girl. Jammed with catchy hooks and clever samples, some of these songs are positively addictive, in particular three infectious slices of ska-soaked pop: “Smile” gleefully mocks the tears of an ex-boyfriend; “LDN” details a stroll through the seedier streets of London amidst a host of criminals and other social deviants; and “Not Big” is a lengthy putdown about a former lover’s shortcomings. Another standout is “Knock ‘Em Out,” a hilarious take about having to endure unwanted advances at a club that makes brilliant use of a rolling Professor Longhair piano lick. Blatantly irreverent and snotty, Allen clearly loves mixing barbs with her beats and it’s nearly impossible not to laugh along with her.

Pop With Fizz.

It's been six months since Lily crashed the Brit Pop tea party, why it took as long as the Mayflower to cross the Atlantic is a bit of a mystery. Perhaps the label wanted to create buzz with an inaccessible album and the occasional quirky Mtv blip. Regardless, Lily Allen has arrived in the long tradition of British outdoing the Americans in the music form we invented.

If Rolling Stone once declared Lisa Stansfield the perfect 90's poster girl (which eventually belonged to Tori & Alanis), then Lily could easily be this decades equivalent. Lily is the kind of girl maybe even Ariel Levy could be proud of. She likes to party, but isn't afraid of dropping an f-bomb when necessary, and throwing a punch or two in the process. She's a pop princess who would rather play in the mud than dress up for the boys. Funny, cute, charming, and a little crazy all at once.

I'm sure you've already heard the vindictively cheeky "Smile" in which the American release features an impressive reinterpretation of the song. The second track "Knock 'Em Out" does just that, an impressively jittery track that jumps right off the CD. One hopes her sophomore release has many more like this one. "LDN" is the modern take on Blondie's "The Tide Is High," in which you really get a feel for her 1980s punk-pop roots. In fact, one could describe her sound as Blondie Pop with a dash of Peaches, blended together into a tart smoothie.

It's easy to mistake edgy with quality. Lily Allen isn't trying to be Bjork, but she knows where to add the right amount of quirkiness to her music. It's still pop... but not a guilty pleasure like so many tend to be. And there is a good chance you'll still be listening to her music a decade or so from now. Nelly, Lindsay, Gwen and the rest of you... start taking notes.

I've been Raving about SMILE for a couple of months now...

...its about time that Lily is getting her kudos'. I have to admit that this is not my typical cup of tea, but after listening to "Smile" (about 40 times) and realizing that "Everything's Just Wonderful", Miss Allen is cool in my book. Her edgy lyrics make you realize that your going to smile and ex's are ex's for a reason. Lily, congratulations on making it across the pond. Keep the tunes coming luv.

Biography

Born: 1985 in London, England

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '00s

With her omnivorous musical tastes and cheeky attitude, London-based pop singer/songwriter Lily Allen made a name for herself almost as soon as she released her demos on the Internet. The daughter of comedian Keith Allen, Lily spent most of her childhood bouncing from one school to another — in fact, she attended 13 different schools between the ages of five and 15. This constant moving meant she didn't have much of a chance to make lasting friendships, so Allen entertained herself with books...
