Between 1986 and 1996, Crowded House were among the few successful practitioners of guitar-based power pop in an era dominated by diva-inspired dance numbers and lite-metal power ballads. Guided by the impeccable instincts of former Split Enz songwriter Neil Finn, the group succeeded with irresistible hook-filled hits such as “Something So Strong,” “Don’t Dream It’s Over” and “Better Be Home Soon” that recalled the succinct passions of ‘60s AM radio and the aggressive chug of ‘70s New Wave. While it would be natural to assume that the group’s comfort zone would be the controlled confines of the recording studio — their arrangements were always precise — this 24-tune “farewell” concert recorded on November 24, 1996 at the Sydney Opera House, as a benefit for Sydney’s Children Hospital, is every bit a worthy addition to the group’s legacy. Naturally, it is looser than their studio recordings, but the added elasticity brings an energy that increases the emotional index. “Private Universe,” “Whispers and Moans,” “Distant Sun,” the songs simply roll out and onward, with an extra skip in their step. A class act from start to finish.
