iTunes Review

Released eight years after her debut album, Madeleine Peyroux's Careless Love paid off handsomely. Not just in the sales success of Careless Love, her 2004 sophomore release, but in the record's quality. Frequently compared with Billie Holiday - the similarities in voice and delivery are inescapable - Peyroux nonetheless claims her own ground. A mostly acoustic jazz-folk meld, the music here (produced by Larry Klein, veteran of many Joni Mitchell albums) is often charming, matching the singer's qualities on upbeat numbers such as "Don't Wait Too Long" and a sunny read of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go." Peyroux reaches deeper on Elliott Smith's alcoholic lament "Between the Bars," suggesting that a more pensive set is within her. Listening to Careless Love, it's hard to imagine having to endure another eight-year wait for her third album.

Billie Reincarnated!

I heard this song on the radio in a rental car over the weekend and came here to buy the album. I had never heard of Madeleine before and now I believe that Billie has been reincarnated. Love Her Madly!

Anyone can adapt the lilts and slurs of Billie Holiday's voice, but it's a poor xerox of the original. Madeleine has improved a lot since this CD - and her originals are the way to go. It's obvious she's attempting an homage in this album, but when she speaks her OWN truth, in her OWN voice, it's a thing of beauty. Hope she keeps writing. Want Billie? Skip this and get Billie for real.

Biography

Born: 1973 in Athens, GA

Genre: Vocal

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Vocalist Madeleine Peyroux can best be thought of as a Billie Holiday for the 1990s. Like Holiday, Peyroux was marketed as a jazz singer, when what she seems to do best is sing blues music. Though Peyroux may remind some listeners of Holiday, there are differences, and she has her own sense of phrasing...
