Album Review

Sticky sweet pop melodies, explosive pop-punk chord progressions, "sensitive guy" lyrics. Yep, this should all sound pretty darn familiar if you're a rock fan circa the early 21st century, as there's been an endless stream of bands (for years by this point) that meet all the prerequisites of the aforementioned checklist. And on their 2007 release, Cities, there are certain moments that you can definitely add Anberlin to this list. Thankfully, they don't specialize in that annoying frat-boy-esque shtick that some pop-punk bands do; instead, Anberlin can be quite an ambitious bunch that go the emo route. While songs such as the album opening "Godspeed" sounds like your average pop-punk band of the moment, tracks such as the acoustic guitar-driven "The Unwinding Cable Car" is emo at its most naked (and includes some pretty darn impressive vocal harmonies). But for the most part, the tunes sound like a hopeful trying to win over the judges in the latest episode of Rockstar, especially on such tracks as "Adelaide" and "Hello Alone." Nothing too groundbreaking here, but nothing cringe-worthy, either.

This is probably their best CD, its up beat with the few songs that just fit right in with the rest.

The Unwinding Cable Car is probably their best song on here... Alot of meaning with it.

Anberlin's best

I've been listening to Anberlin for about three years now, I have all of their songs, albums and remixes. But coming back to "Cities" I have to say it is still my favorite. On this album, the diversity of the styles is incredible. "Godspeed" is an upbeat rocker that gets the energy going to start things off, "Whisper and a Clamor" is a sensationally emotional piece that his heart wrenching. Yet the style changes even more..."Adelaide" is leaning towards pop, yet maintains an indie style that defines Anberlin, and they bring the acoustics home with brilliance on "The Unwinding Cable Car" and "Inevitable".

To wrap up, Anberlin brings home everything to expect on an indie rock/pop album. They've shattered my expectations and showed their best songs on this album.

NOTHING TOO GROUNDBREAKING!?

This album is possibly one of the best of this genre that I have ever heard. And I know this is something I am by no means qualified to say, but fin, (unfortunately album only) could quite possibly be the greatest song of this young century. Every part of it is expertly crafted to be powerful and catchy. Far more than your average pop album.
