iTunes Review

The final entry in Neil Young’s legendary “doom trilogy”, which includes the masterful Tonight’s the Night and Time Fades Away, On the Beach plays as a soundtrack to the hushed and troubled aftermath of Tonight’s the Night’s noisy catharsis. Having payed due tribute to his departed friends, and having reclaimed his status as a musical outsider, On the Beach finds Young ready to pick up the pieces and move on. The funk-inflected survivor’s anthem “Walk On” sets the tone, viewing the mistakes of the past through a lens that is part hazy nostalgia, part dread and doubt. Young still sounds haunted, but the harrowing “Ambulance Blues” and the paranoid dread of the title track sound like the work of a man who is coming to terms with his demons. On “Revolution Blues” Young bids farewell to the dissolute Laurel Canyon folk scene in a hail of imaginary bullets, aided by solid backing from members of the Band, while the slyly ironic “Vampire Blues” finds him imagining himself as a vengeful destroyer of worlds. On the Beach is an album of paradoxes; it spins beauty out of desolation and hope out of fear and paranoia. It is among Neil Young’s finest accomplishments.

Incredibly, almost a lost work...

Neil Young has a catalog greater than everyone but Bob Dylan in volume. He is always making new music, some amazing, some not quite up to snuff, but he is always working on something that will offer some surprises.

This is old music, from 73-74, and was out of print, and did not get re-released until 2003 on CD. I think side two of this record is some of his very best work, particularly "On the Beach" and "Ambulance Blues". "On the Beach" features beautiful, slow... shimmery, trippy Pink Floyd type guitars and rhythms, and the Folky Acoustic Guitar masterpiece "Ambulance Blues" tells so much about life, especially when in summary Neil sublty says "An ambulance can only go so... fast". There are limits, everyone's time comes to pass. 5 out of 5 stars.

Without a doubt, Neil Young's best album.

Along with "Tonight's the Night" and the impossible to find "Time Fades Away", "On the Beach" chronicles the most tumultuous time in Young's life, following the heroin overdose deaths of Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten and roadie Bruce Berry and Young's own struggles with drugs and disenfranchisement. "On the Beach" is intensely personal, with moments of meloncholy, frustration and humor peppered throughout.

While the album does not contain any of Young's best-known hits, it does contain many of his best songs...the meloncholy "See the Sky About to Rain", the savage Manson manifesto "Revolution Blues", the indictment of capitalism run amok in "Vampire Blues", and the reflective "On the Beach" and "Ambulance Blues".

"On The Beach" is an undisputed classic. If it's not in your collection, well...it should be.

This album is beautifully done, from the cover, to the lyrics, to the story each song paints... Perfection at its simplest form.

After Neil Young left the California folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield in 1968, he slowly established himself as one of the most influential and idiosyncratic singer/songwriters of his generation. Young's body of work ranks second only to Bob Dylan in terms of depth, and he was able to sustain his critical...
