iTunes Review
Mix rainy day Parisian pop, cosmopolitan New York trip-hop sophistication and a lazy, hazy California psychedelia reminiscent of the codeine-fueled balladry of Mazzy Star and you have the basic sonic thrust of Israeli-born singer-songwriter Keren Ann and her self-titled fourth solo album. She uses gentle accents of keyboards and slowly modulating tones from cellos and violins to heighten the mystery as her quiet, unassuming voice swoons over travel and romance, a grand hope for humanity and a series of fleeting images that deliver themselves as private poetry. Recorded in Iceland, NY, LA, Israel, Paris and Avignon, France, at nine songs Keren Ann is both compact and expansive, luxuriant yet economical. There are no wasted notes; those chosen are exquisitely presented, and a nightclub vibe pervades. Whether it’s the seedy barroom scene that underpins the con-job, “It’s No Crime,” or the classy champagne elegance of “Where No Endings End” that sounds as if it belongs in a film from the French New Wave cinema of the early 60s, Keren Ann maintains an afterhours consistency that’s cool and detached, yet warm and emotive.
Customer Reviews
Pure beauty
An album of pure beauty, worthy of many repeat listens, that continues to grow on you over time. Keren Ann's voice is soft and warm, welcoming and gentle even when the topics she sings about verge on the dark and mysterious. This is her first all-English language album since Not Going Anywhere, and a great place to start if you are new to her music. Nolita is also highly recommended. Perfect late-night music on magical evenings.
Keren is an Angel!!!
Ho Hum, yet another triumph from this gifted angel. I saw her at a church in Austin, Texas during the South by Southwest festival, and she debuted at least two of these tracks to a stunned crowd of
admirers. This album was worth the wait! Highly recommended.
Triumphant! A Beautiful record
Do I hear echoes of Serge Gainsbourg? "It Ain't No Crim" has some GREAT whacked out instrumentation, fantastic guitar work reminiscnet of Serge's "Cannabis" soundtrack but it's strangely original. Keren Ann is one of these artists that evolve with every record. I love this and haven't stopped listening to it since I bought it on iTunes earlier this week. Favorite tracks are the radio friendly "Lay Your Head Down" and "Harder Ships Of The World" and the beautiful, haunting "Liberty." This is worth your $s ladies and gents. Finally some meaningful music.
