Album Review

Harper, who grew up in Australia, is a menacing vocalist, an effective harmonica player, and a songwriter whose pieces have simple but effective messages. His music is on the rockish side of the blues without a single 12-bar blues being on this disc. Harper features an excellent guitar-driven backup band that fits perfectly with his vocals and harmonica. Highlights include "Do What Is Right," "Watch Your Back," "Just What You're Looking For," "Get Out Of This Mess" and "You Can't Hide." The main messages and plots of many of the songs are in their titles but there are some subtle surprises heard along the way. While all of the concise selections clock in between 3:21 and 4:35, the length seems optimal for each song. Harper says his piece without ever overstaying his welcome. His music is well worth exploring for collectors of modern rockish roots music.
