Album Review

Never failing to be quirky and eccentric, Brave Combo has a very unorthodox Christmas album in It's Christmas, Man! Many of the songs are familiar, but what the foursome does with them definitely isn't. When was the last time you heard a ska version of Mel Tormé's "The Christmas Song," an Afro-Cuban take on "The Little Drummer Boy" or a samba version of "O, Christmas Tree?" And the impressive thing is that Brave Combo's off-center ideas (whether applied to original or familiar material) usually work. Very global in its outlook, the Combo combines American rock and R&B with everything from German polka to Mexican ranchero and Colombian cumbia, and, most of the time, manages to pull it off. If you want to hear a Christmas album that takes more than its share of chances, this CD would be a fine choice.

Yeah man, who'd know?

Man I've been listening to "The Christmas Song" for ten years without realizing who played it (burned CD). It wasn't until I heard "Aja Sam," a Czech polka song (my ancestors) that got me into this neat folk band. Who knew they've been around for TWENTY years.

When my aged mother heard "The Little Drummer Boy" she loved it. "I get so tired of hearing all that "pa-rump-a-pum-pum" stuff during the holidays. I like their version". Brave Combo's version of Drummer Boy and other classics will put a nice twist on some standards. Highly recommended.

Applying the polka and world-music dance treatment to a most unlikely song lineup ("People Are Strange," "Sixteen Tons," "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," "O Holy Night"), Brave Combo formed in the late '70s in the small Texas hometown of vocalist and guitarist Carl Finch, recorded three albums for the self-owned...
