Album Review
Since the first Foo Fighters album was a collection of Dave Grohl solo recordings, their second, The Colour and the Shape, is in many ways their official debut, and it certainly does sound different than its predecessor. Producer Gil Norton has tightened up the sound considerably — his control was so tight that drummer William Goldsmith left the band during the recording, leaving Grohl to record the rhythm tracks for the bulk of the album. Certainly, Norton's big, shiny sound makes The Colour and the Shape sound more professional than the debut, but the presence of a full band makes a difference, too. The full Foo Fighters make Grohl's songs heavier, not punkier, which may be a little unsettling to fans of the debut's ragged, amateurish edge. It's also strange that the album has such a glossy, arena-ready sound, since Grohl's songs are introspective, quite different than the endearing punk-pop of its predecessor. They're also not quite as catchy as before, but the band compensates by delivering them with a brutal energy. Still, the lack of immediate hooks prevents The Colour and the Shape from truly catching fire. [The Japanese edition adds a bonus track, "Dear Lover."]

Foo Fighters!!!!!
by Mick JackersThe key songs on this album are Monkeywrench (has insane guitar and drums), Hey Johnny Park, Up in arms (has insane druming), and Everlong (insane drums). David Grohl is amazing. Great album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing
by ModRocker13The best part about this album is that even though it is often looked at as the ambitious overblown debut, this album shows Dave Grohl's maturation as a songwriter. Im sorry, but rock bands today have been cutting out albums with so much poppy distorted immature crap that its easy for me to return to this album, when I can be reminded that maybe rock hasn't truly died. I feel as though every band today has craved to create themselves in an image and likeness to The Fray, or Greenday, and it sickens me. What happened to the days when rock bands were original? As a 17 year old, I must say there is SOME good music out there today, but Im very nostalgic when it comes to music. Not too many bands out there today will see me purchasing their albums, unless it is substance worth listening to. I look forward to the Foo Fighters continuing their success for years to come. The Foos are like the Wings to the Nirvana's "Beatles" status, and then some. I think Dave, you have really distinguished yourself from everybody else, rock on!
