iTunes Review
You can be forgiven for sleeping on this album — it’s a decidedly low-key, spaced-out instrumental affair — but do it at your own peril. The beauty of this music lies in its simplicity (although the songs are neither beautiful nor simple). The Beasties throw together a mix of funky soul rhythms, gritty hip-hop beats, electronica flourishes, and psychedelic rock meanderings, all under the heavy influence of dub music. To say that the songs “go nowhere” is to entirely miss the point. Yes, their structures are basic, but, at their best, there are dense layers to be peeled away and enjoyed, and deep grooves to sink into. “Suco de Tangerina,” for example, begins with dub-style bass and keyboards before picking up a Latin-pop tinge, while “Electric Worm” boasts a distinct reggae feel ushered by slinky, sinuous guitar lines. “Freaky Hijiki” is an irresistible slice of subdued, trance-inducing funk while “B for My Name” is loungy, organ-driven soul jazz. Perhaps best of all are “The Gala Event” and “Off the Grid,” rock-oriented tracks that blend heavy, plodding beats with a heady dose of sonic experimentation. Some tracks definitely feel more half-baked than others, but there’s enough compelling sounds packed in to make The Mix-Up a worthwhile headphone experience.
Customer Reviews
Attention narrow minded reviewers...
To U nimrods that is dissing this new joint... did U even read the dang review before U downloaded The Mix-up??? Sample Review: "Warning... this is an instrumental" No sh*t, it said it right on the iTunes review and in every other dang music mag for the last 3 months. This album is straight up funky, no doubt. Sorry there aint no lyrics for U to memorize so U can rap battle with your fraternity brothers.
B-Boys hit this one out the park... Big ups to the Boyz and see U at the SB Bowl.
The REAL Beastie Boys
While The Beastie Boys became famous for their rap songs, those who have truly followed them over the years know their true love is _music_. Anyone who's thumbed thru the Grand Royal magazine (RIP) they used to release will know what they love. This is an album of influences of the Beasties themselves. This is not their first instrumental album, and I hope it won't be the last.
Unfortunately it appears theres a more ignorant and/or younger crowd that has grown up not knowing the roots of the music they love. Understood, it's been bastardized to hell and back over the years. But rap came from soul, jazz, punk & rock, and that's what this record is (true punk is a state of mind, not a monotonous guitar chord bashing--most of the UK punks were into dub, which is very present on this record).
This album is a history lesson--in styles, in production, and in the instruments used. One may not like it when Licence to Ill is his/her favorite album, but when the band are heavy musicologists, a repetitive 808 beat starts to get boring. Enjoy this for what it is.
The New In Sound
This album is 47 minutes of pure funktastic jamming. These songs bleed together more so than on The In Sound From Way Out. Most likely because those songs were from different albums, where as this was clearly all put together at the same time. If you are even the slightest fan of the Beastie Boys previous instrumental work, buy this without hesitation or fear. Enjoy!
