iTunes Review

After a five-year hiatus, John Lennon and Yoko Ono returned to the recording studio to put together an album that would reflect the state of their lives as adults and parents re-entering the world of pop music. “Just Like Starting Over” was an obvious nod to Lennon’s reintroduction to this atmosphere, while “Watching the Wheels” took great joy in expressing his own contentment with letting the world pass him by. “Woman” is his tribute to Yoko. “Beautiful Boy” addresses his obligations to his young son, Sean. The husband-wife team split up writing and performing duties and Yoko’s songs are among her most pop-charged and much in tune with the new-wave rock happening around her. “Kiss Kiss Kiss” is a punky little pop number.” “I’m Moving On” strikes a defiant chord coming after Lennon’s “I’m Losing You.” Yet, while Ono’s contributions compliment Lennon’s and there is more than a little dialogue going on here, Lennon is still the clear-eyed leader, brandishing a firm grip on the pop dynamic of his songwriting and his always first-rate vocal approach.

An Absolutely Incredible Album, Buy It Now

by DanSpo

I'm glad I read the reviews before I bought this album. Of course John's songs were going to be good, but I was expecting Yoko's to be absolutely horrid, terrible, retched pieces of horrifying excrement based on what I read. When I listened to this album, I was so glad that that wasn't true. John's songs are amazing, definitely some of the best he ever wrote, but the real surprise came from Yoko. I had always avoided listening to any Yoko Ono songs before I bought this album because of what I had read, but they are not bad at all; in fact, they are quite good. The only part that bothered me was the end of "Kiss Kiss Kiss" where Yoko fakes an orgasm for some reason. The only explanation I can think of for people to think of these songs the way they do is that they are blinded by their hate of Yoko the person. Try to listen to these songs and forget about what you think of the person. They are very good songs and you would only miss out by inexplicably hating them.

Yoko oh Yoko

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s

Out of all the Beatles, John Lennon had the most interesting — and frustrating — solo career. Lennon was capable of inspired, brutally honest confessional songwriting and melodic songcraft; he also had a tendency to rest on his laurels, churning out straight-ahead rock & roll without...
