Album Review

Pianist Thelonious Monk's appearance with a tentet at a 1959 Town Hall concert was a major success. With Hal Overton contributing arrangements of Monk's tunes (including a remarkable transcription of Monk's original piano solo on "Little Rootie Tootie") and solos provided by trumpeter Donald Byrd, trombonist Eddie Bert, altoist Phil Woods, Charlie Rouse on tenor, and baritonist Pepper Adams, this date was a real standout. The program has also been included in Monk's huge Riverside box set but, for more budget-minded consumers, this CD is a must. There would only be one other recorded occasion (Monk's 1963 Philharmonic Hall concert) when the unique pianist was as successfully featured with a larger ensemble. [A Japanese version included bonus tracks.]

the quintessential monk

If I had to pick my favorite Jazz album which would be very hard to do, it would likely be this one. The first time I heard it in 1963, it excited me so much I went to the Record Hunter on 5th Ave and tried to buy it. They had no copies but looked it up in Schwanns and ordered it for me. I went back every day until it arrived. Charlie Rouse's solos are among this great (and underrated) sax players best. The horn harmonies blending with Monks paino are breathtaking. Most of monks work has been with the quartet but this big band plays his music as if it were written just for them. The members read like a list of legends. After over 40 years I still never get tired of listening to this album. Great music.

The most important jazz musicians are the ones who are successful in creating their own original world of music with its own rules, logic, and surprises. Thelonious Monk, who was criticized by observers who failed to listen to his music on its own terms, suffered through a decade of neglect before he...
