Album Review

You'd probably have to dump a bucket of ice on J. Holiday's head in order to see his eyelids open more than half way, at least going by the singer's photos and persistently slack delivery. He's always relaxed, even when he's decreeing the "Thug Commandments." It doesn't mean he's lacking passion. (He might even sound like Chris Brown if he wasn't high and/or intoxicated so frequently — who knows?) Despite what it seems like on the surface, Holiday has the stoned but deep-feeling thing down pat, as indicated by "Bed," the gently rocking, unapologetically sleazy, and uniquely endearing single that became a number one R&B single just before the release of Back of My Lac'. Those who are hoping for the album to contain more of that sensitive thuggery delivered by a swaggering softie won't be let down, as most of the other songs revolve around seduction and heartache. Holiday also likes to sing about getting high and drunk, quite possibly far too much for those who don't indulge. While some of the come-ons are problematic as well — he compliments a woman by comparing her body to that of a call girl — there's enough sincere sweetness to lure a guarded heart. And it wouldn't hurt to have a thing for slight lisps.

J. Holiday-Back Of My Lac

Having one of the biggest hits of the summer, Washington D.C. native J. Holiday delivers his debut, Back Of My Lac.

Back Of My Lac: J starts the album off with a relaxed ode to the street life, what he sees and what his music is for. Chillin in the back of his lac, this light and smooth introduction is nice and a hint of what's to come. 3.5/5
Ghetto: Guitar influenced, backed by a drum band, it was only decent. The track was a little dull, it lacked and doesn't possess that real soulfulness. 2.5/5
Thug Commandments: Despite the lacking "Ghetto", Holiday makes "Thug Commandments" into a smooth soulful track. Light production, Holiday is very smooth and makes the thug life a lot nicer sounding. A good track that shows Holday's talent. 3.5/5
Bed: The second single, produced by Def Jam upcoming R&B artist The Dream. Excellent beat that was unique, as Holiday's voice is like a breath of fresh air. He hits the high notes nicely and the timing of it is beautifully crafted. Excellent track and definitely a highlight. 5/5
Betcha Never Had: Steady drum patterns and moans of a girl on the hook are the background sounds of this decent midtempo. The moans get a little annoying and it was only average. 3/5
Good For Each Other: Excellent production by The Platinum Brothers, a great sample and piano line, as well as building horns. Holiday creates a nice old school feel, that is more than just sex, just that they were meant to be together. A great track here, that is one of the stronger cuts. 4/5
Come Here: Thumping bassline, with a nice harp line and synths. Decent track that is relaxing, mellow and spacious. 3/5
Be With Me: First single that created minimal buzz, but truly shines. Darkchild has a good production and Holiday's singing really sounds nice on here, as the harmonizing at the hook is great. Very soulful track here. 4/5
Suffocate: C. Tricky Stewart produced, this is the next single. Light guitar lacing, heavy claps and a piano line at the hook support Holiday's midtempo singing. A sweet love track that will definitely have success, it is a lot more slow and focused. 4.5/5
Fatal: A slow rolling ballad, The Underdogs have a nice mellow production. Holiday's singing is slow and relaxing, the bassline works well underneath his voice and it works. 3.5/5
Without You: Darkchild is back with a midtempo bass heavy production that has soulful loops. The track is feel good, not quite amazing but nice. 3.5/5
Pimp In Me: Sounds very similar to Lloyd's "Player's Prayer", but I still liked it. The complimenting piano and soulful hook work well. I enjoyed it and I'm sure others will as well, to me it is better than Lloyd's "Player's Prayer". 4/5
Thank You: This isn't a track thanking fans or management, like Chris Brown's "Thank You", but it is still nicely done. A slow track that is light in terms of production and is more of thanking the ladies by making love to them. 3.5/5
Fallin: Guitar laced track, it has pop potential and is a nice track. Nice ender, as piano, organs and sax come in to help at the chorus. Good track. 3.5/5

J. Holiday's Back Of My Lac, is a strong debut. The D.C. native can definitely sing, as evident on several of the tracks. "Bed" is the hit, but there are others that are worthy of hit single material. Next single, "Suffocate" should have success, it is a lot more focused and a love track. "Good For Each Other" is a nice old school feel, "Be With Me" is another solid love track, and "Pimp In Me" is an excellent track that has golden vocals. The album starts with three street tracks, then goes into the relationship tracks, "Fallin" is a nice ender with pop potential. Strong debut.

wow. great first album!

this album will sell. j. holiday's clean, sexy voice and fresh lyrics will sell your heart in no time. with catchy slow tunes like "bed", "betcha never had", and "be with me", he will rise to the top and become an r&b star within weeks. already on the charts with his hit single, "bed" i predict his next single will probably be "betcha never had" or "come here." both are catchy songs with an excellent beat. CLICK YES IF YOU THINK J. HOLIDAY WILL GO PLATINUM!

R&B has a new season to celebrate....

J. HOLIDAY! The album is respected and fresh. It's kind of like Bobby Valentino but more deep in lyrics. Fallin' is off the hook, as well as Betcha Never Had and of course Bed.
