Album Review
It's more mixing of stylized punk revival and hybridism with left-field musical experimentation and in-the-now pop culture lyrical references on Splinter, the Offspring's seventh full-length. "Never Gonna Find Me," "Long Way Home," and "Lightning Rod" each bristle with overdriven guitars and Dexter Holland's high-pitched bleating; they're somewhat workmanlike, but still roil with that precision fury particular to a veteran band. At the same time, Holland, guitarist Noodles, and bassist Greg Kriesel can't resist returning to the towel-slapping trash humor and mean-spirited loathing that typified past tracks like "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)" and "Self Esteem." Lead single "Hit That" talks up baby daddies over a bopping bassline and keyboard right out of a Bloodhound Gang track, while "Spare Me the Details" subverts its lighthearted acoustic strum with foul-mouthed (on the clean version, anyway) attacks on a philandering girlfriend ("I'm not the one who acted like a ho"). "Da Hui" overdrives surf rock while paying homage to hardcore Hawaiian board riders, and "When You're in Prison" ends Splinter with sage advice about protecting your dignity in the clink. Longtime fans will be more than happy with Splinter, which crams every last piece of the Offspring puzzle — slickly produced rock racket, hints of anti-establishment rabble-rousing, and reams of relationship and strip mall culture gaggery — into its brief half-hour run time.

Not as bad as everyone says.
by joey891. Neocon 7/10 ehhh good intro... but nothing more
2. The Noose 9/10 Awesome! love the drumming reminds me of classic offspring. Don't really know what its about.
3. Long Way Home 8/10 Good song.
4. Hit That 7/10 Not a bad single.. but once you listen to the rest of the album, you will find this is one of their weakest songs
5. Race Against Myself 10/10 One of the best songs on the album!! Love the intro... heck I love all of it.
6. (Can't Get My) Head Around You 9/10 Good song to jam too
7. The Worst Hangover Ever 9/10 Funny Song!! but it gets old after a few listens
8. Never Gonna Find Me 5/10 Worst song on the album.. I didn't really enjoy this one.
9. Lightning Rod 10/10 Pure Awesomeness!! Love the chorus!
10. Spare Me the Details 9/10 haha! funny! The bridge is pretty cool.
11. Da Hui (Explicit (9/10)) (Clean 4/10)) Yep I gave it two scores.. when Dexter curses its a good song but I bought the clean CD by mistake and this is the worst song on that CD because of the censorship
12. When Your in Prison (8/10) Interesting way to end the album... I don't find it too bad but I do find it unnesessary since the offspring don't play this song.. or... do...they?
It grows on most people
by EpiphysisOkay, here's the thing. It's not a bad album... the only problem is it doesn't measure up with their other more successful albums. And it's not bad because it wasn't successful, it wasn't successful because it's not that great. But it grows on most people. Most of the songs grew on me, but usually when I pop the CD in to take a listen, I end up getting really stoked for the first few songs, skip a bunch after, give up, and find something else to listen to. The first 4 songs are great, it gets you really pumped! But the next two (Race Against Myself and Can't Get My Head Around You) are just terrible. Really brings down the album. Then, you get a bit if hope with the joke song "The Worst Hangover Ever" ...and then back down again with Never Gonna Find Me. They tried too hard to sound like Americana, and Americana wasn't all that great to begin with. It had some songs that worked, but this one certainly doesn't. The rest are just bad, except for Spare Me the Details.
So yeah, not a great album. Average songs, except for a little less than half. But like I said, most of it will likely grow on you. It didn't for me.
Under-rated
by squidmonkeyThis is, in my opinion, a great album, on par with Smash. I wouldn't mind "Da Hui" and "When You're in Prison" being omitted, but if you just ignore the last 4 minutes, it's an amazing album.
