Album Review
Coming off a Best New Artist Award at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, the members of Avenged Sevenfold returned to the studio, ambitious to create an exciting follow-up to City of Evil, and their self-titled release often focuses hard on pushing the songs into non-metal territory. Their signature blistering Yngwie Malmsteen guitar arpeggios and lightning fast double-kick drums are still evident, while AS show their unbridled enthusiasm to be as inventive as possible as they run through a staggering amount of production enhancements: four songs have string arrangements; violinists, pianists, and vocalists make guest appearances here and there; "A Little Piece of Heaven" is a strange Mr. Bungle-type number with sax, clarinet, trombone, and trumpet; and "Unbound (The Wild Ride)" throws in the most un-metal addition of all — a children's choir. Some of these enhancements help take the songs to the next level, while others give the sensation of inappropriately mashed-up styles. Vocalist M. Shadows, who required surgery on his vocal cords after Waking the Fallen, shows that his training with Ron Anderson (vocal coach for Layne Staley, Axl Rose, and Chris Cornell) has been for the greater good. Rather than screaming or doing the metal growl, he sings in a few gritty voices, showing an obvious Mike Patton influence, and actually sounds pitch-perfect. His skills and the entire band's technical ferocity are flawless as ever, and although they get lost in a cluttered vision, their willingness to experiment is admirable.

Great Album for a7x fans
i thought this was a great evolution from city of evil. These tracks are more focused and have solid foundation.

Scream: another good rocker, its a little dark but still exciting 9/10
Afterlife: one of the best on the album! a stunnin job 10/10
Gunslinger: good clean intro in to the mayhem! its a briliant tune. 9/10
Unbound (The Wild Ride): pure shread with a little twist of raunch! 9/10
Brompton Cocktail: great song instant classic very catchy 9/10
Lost: tied with my favroite song on the album, this is the most metal of all the songs 10/10
A Little Piece Of Heaven: This song is pure genius, its almost like a metal opus, pure genious if u get only one song get this or Lost 11/10
Dear God: basically its a love country song, not recomemded if ur not a pure fan but its still good. 7/10
if u love a7x get this you will not regret it!
it's rocks
there is no accurate word to describe this awesome record
It's mixture of music of our time, like rock, metal, hardcore, punk, pops, hiphop, and whatever.
If you live now and listen to anything you're interested in and put everything to the song you make, there may come Avenged sevenfold (oh, if you like it played LOUD)
you can jump, sing, dance, or do anything with it.
It's just too great music.
maybe some people hate this, as Avenged sevenfold keep changing theire style
but, if you listen to it precisely, there is no "change", they're just improving
hope you're not too narrow minded to decide anything before listening to them
you listen to the MUSIC, and YOU decide whether you like it or not
I love it, and that all matters
Absolutely F**king Amazing!
I have been eagerly anticipating the release of this cd, and was pissed that they changed the release date from the 16th to the 30th. Finally, after pre-ordering, getting up at midnight and downloading (which took 2-2.5 hours thanks to dial-up internet), I now have the album in my grubby little hands.
If you were to play a track from Waking The Fallen and one from this CD, it would definatly envoke a "WTF!?" reaction. This CD is more rock-pop-epic metal oriented, with songs that sound like they're straight off the hard rock station. I've gotten as far as Brompton Cocktail at this point, and it's very impressive-the lyrics are great, lots of violins, driving guitars (more like the ones of Waking The Fallen), and a polished sound. M. Shadows sings great...everyone does great on this album. Face it, Avenged Sevenfold will never do the same thing twice in a row, and their style is always subject to change. I bet that they could pull off anything-country, skaa, polka, you name it!
Give some of the songs a try-yes, they are very different and are more pop-ish, but really, there are recurrent themes from their other two CD's that pop up every now and then-- take, for instance, Lost. It sounds like a song from City Of Evil, totally. Same style, same guitars.
Now, I love the song A Little Piece of Heaven. If you are a fan of epic metal, you will love this!
This reminds me of the cd Epica by Kamelot-if you like this song, be sure to check out that album, along with bands like Heavenly and Sonata Arctica.
I'm going to see Avenged Sevenfold live on November 2nd. I am absolutely stoked, and I have to wait two more days!!! Aghhh!
