CHRISTMAS is IN THE HOUSE!!!!
by muziklovezmiKnowing that it is better to give than it is to receive, King Street’s funky bunch delivers some bonus Christmas-themed clubbing with a couple of real treats. Not only does Eric Kupper’s ‘Silent Night’ have a seasonal magic about it, it’s conceived in the best possible taste: unassuming yet instantly recognisable and utterly charming. It’s like you’ve come straight from the department store to the VIP bar with bags of presents still under your arms. Kenny Bobien redirects the choir from church to club with a soul-steeped remix of ‘Come O Ye Faithful’ that’s equally as respectful, without forsaking the core values of either the label’s sound or the real message of the festive period. DJ Spen even puts a bit of jack into an inspiring singalong around the tree.
However! Despite the season of goodwill approaching, the cynic inside cannot be quietened. It points to some inclusions that are standard King Street tracks, with added sleigh bells. Stephanie Cooke’s ‘It’s X’mas’ and Diviniti’s ‘The Reason’ are undoubtedly the smoothest carolling you’ll hear all year. But to the unsuspecting enquirer, those concerned have pulled out a King Street offcut and spent a matter of minutes applying lyrical tinsel. Jihad Muhammad’s ‘It’s Holiday Time’ has neither Yuletide lyrics, nor mistletoe production trimmings. It’s just a soulful house tune that’s cool to get your eggnog on to, but acts as the compilation’s Scrooge. Even so, if you think the Christmas compilation market has been lining the pockets of Slade and Wizard for too long, here’s the chance to smarten up the Xmas party into something far classier. 5/7 - Matt Oliver (One Week To Live, UK)
