iTunes Review

Thriller’s late-1982 release marked the beginning of Michael Jackson’s entry into another level of fame; it also saw the end of a great five-year period of creativity that had seen him raise his solo game on the unstoppable Off the Wall and make heavy contributions to the Jacksons’ Destiny and Triumph. Stripping the weight of history from Thriller is a big job, but hearing the record as a statement in itself remains hugely rewarding. Seven of its nine original cuts were Top Ten singles, but more important is the way Jackson and producer Quincy Jones turned the singer’s obsessions into intricate, stunningly sung pop-funk. From the knowing humor of the title track to the dread of “Billie Jean” and “Beat It” and the irresistible cuteness of “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” and “Baby Be Mine,” Thriller finds Jackson at an artistic height. A quarter century later, it still sells. And nostalgia is far down the list of reasons why.

Michael Jackson was a great artist. With every song over 3:30 in length, he proved that he was NOT in it just to make a quick buck. He has, without a doubt, the most unique voice in music history. Whenever you hear his voice, you know instantly that it's MICHAEL JACKSON.

Now, I've decided to read the negative reviews ('cause I know there's some smart-assses out there), and everyone's criticizing MJ for completely irrelevant reasons. Seriously, people. What does his surgery have anything to do with this album, or music in general? How is the child thing necessary in reviewing an album? And the most laughable comment that I read was when some fool criticized this album for being "old". Yes, it's old. So what? It's still good.

Here's a nice song-by-song review of the album:

1. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' (9/10)-A nice song that gets better near the end. It's got that famous little "mama-say, mama-sa, mama-koo-sa" thing we all know we heard somewhere.
2. Baby Be Mine (8/10)-A decent song that isn't nearly as good as the rest of the album.
3. The Girl Is Mine (10/10)-Very creative song in which Michael and Paul McCartney fight over a girl. I think it's called a duet.
4. Thriller (9/10)-Great song, with an even better music video. But the video isn't on the album.
5. Beat It (15/10)-My favorite song off of the entire album. Eddie Van Halen's solo completes it.
6. Billie Jean (15/10)-Ridiculously catchy song, with nice lyrics.
7. Human Nature (9/10)-I haven't listened to this song enough, but so far I think it's catchy.
8. P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) (9/10)-A nice upbeat song.
9. The Lady In My Life (10/10)-Slowest song on the album, great finisher.

MUST BUYS: Beat It, Billie Jean, The Girl Is Mine, The Lady In My Life

But I think you'll end up downloading the entire thing.
