iTunes Review

Bette Midler’s first feature film star vehicle finds the fiery pop chanteuse tackling a feat of musical alchemy as unlikely as Barbra Streisand’s A Star is Born — successfully transforming her saucy, former gay bath house persona the Divine Ms M into a doomed, Janis Joplin-inspired blues-rock singer. The 1980 project netted Midler a hit album, a top three title single, and an Oscar nod as Best Actress, catapulting her into the top rank of American double-threat film/music stars in the bargain. While the presence of producer Paul Rothschild (who helmed Joplin’s final album, The Pearl) ostensibly cements the connection between Midler and her tragic inspiration, the tracks themselves often veer in wildly disparate directions, from the Motor City-inspired hard rock of the opening “Whose Side Are You On” to a suitably lugubrious, modest hit cover of Percy Sledge’s evergreen “When a Man Loves a Woman,” and the bittersweet, Amanda McBroom-penned hit title ballad whose enduring success is rivaled only by her Beaches centerpiece, “Wind Beneath My Wings.”

Bette Midler is truely a goddess in this film and the outrageous diva rocker style singing doesn't get old for a second. The album is worth every penny. If you only buy a few though I'd say get Stay With Me over The Rose. I can listen to Stay with me endlessly for hours. She's so passionate.

A fine soundtrack and an excellent movie debut

There are no flaws with any of the songs here - rock solid and tragic - it showed us Bette's ability to act and to sing in character. My one complaint is that "Fire Down Below" - a standout performance in the film, is still missing from every release of the soundtrack.

Grammy, Oscar whatever.

Bette Midler counts singing as only one of her talents; at times, since 1972, when she first came to national recognition, it has seemed to be the least of her talents. Still, she has managed to score a number of major hits in a roller-coaster career as a recording artist. Born in Paterson, NJ, and raised...
