iTunes Review
A fairy tale ambiance hangs over One Cell in the Sea (2007), the beguiling debut release by A Fine Frenzy. Singer/songwriter Alison Sudol — the sole member of AFF — has a breathy, waif-like vocal presence, bringing to mind Taken By Trees’ Victoria Bergsman, Over the Rhine’s Karen Bergquist and similar folk-pop chanteuses. Her delicately-embroidered material blends a Victorian-era delicacy with a precocious feel for pop hooks. It’s an appealing combination for anyone who likes languid yet bright melodies combined with dreamily evocative wordplay. “The Minnow & the Trout,” “Ashes and Wine” and “Whisper” draw the listener into private landscapes lit by inner emotional fires. Reveries like “Borrowed Time” and “Last of Days” shimmer in misty clouds of sadness. Though she favors oblique musings, Sudol can also make her meanings plain, as the aching “Almost Lover” shows. Most pleasing are the upbeat numbers, particularly the sparkling “You Picked Me” and “Think of You.” David Campbell’s strings add rich tones to Sudol’s fluid piano lines.

The Review?
A Fine Frenzy is not simply another girl singer to emerge after the boom of the late nineties and the songs are certainly anything but dull. The first review I ever read was that she had a Jane Austen-like feel to her music that made people romantic and subject to whatever emotion Alison was trying to put through in her music. I was in now way bored when listening to any of her songs and I have to ask myself just exactly what the reviewer from iTunes had against her. "Ashes and Wine" is probably one of the most beautiful and intelligent songs I've heard recently and "Last of Days" has some truly impressive instrumental parts alongside the outstanding vocals. I can see most of her songs soundtracking plenty of romantic or emotional scenes in movies or on tv. It's a versatile tone and Sudol is an excellent vocalist. The reviewer had clearly been listening to some REALLY good music that day in order to have given her such a harsh critique and such weak comparisons. Poor Ashlee Simpson and Avril Lavigne can't hold a candle to Alison in depth or inspiration.
liar, liar
no, no, itunes, you've got it all wrong. this music is the best i've heard in quite a while - i have the whole album and i've listened to almost the whole thing nearly every day since i bought it! i love it, as do those those i've introduced it to, and if you choose to write it off as "unremarkably dull", i think you're missing out...it is on the contrary - fantastically sparkling. so, sorry itunes, i hope whoever reviewed this gives it another chance and writes a truer review. and as for you, alison, keep it up, we're listening. :)
Got hooked!
I heard Rangers while I was casually browsing Itunes' music library, and I fell in love. Her songs are mellow and I can't believe she isnt bigger! Well, maybe it is a good thing she isnt big yet, that way, the public can't pressure her to go too mainstream with her music. Overall, this album is a 10/10!
