Album Review
"I'm so addicted to all the things you do when you're going down on me," sings frontman Jared Weeks in his best Kroeger-cribbing croon, thus jumpstarting Saving Abel's first single — the Nickelback knockoff "Addicted" — with a slab of sexual bravado. Led by competent vocals and plenty of guitar muscle, the band's self-titled debut makes all the right moves for a modern rock release. The biggest problem, then, isn't found in the band's musicianship, but rather its intentions. Within Saving Abel's first five minutes, Weeks sings about women pleasing him in bed, losing their clothing in his car, and doing god knows what behind closed hotel doors. Talent aside, he comes across as less of a vocalist and more of a kiss-and-tell showoff when he gloats about such sexual escapades, and the band does itself a disservice with those first two songs. Several tracks later, "18 Days" blends blue-collar power balladry with wholly positive lyrics, sounding vaguely like Candlebox's "It's Alright" with Chris Daughtry at the helm. The song is perfect fodder for modern rock radio, but only when it's taken out of context, since Saving Abel is still stinging with the aftershocks of testosterone overload by the time that tune rolls around. Over the course of the 11-track album, the band does manage to upright itself, leaving the listener to wonder why Saving Abel chose to lead off with grungy c**k rock instead of a more endearing number. After all, when an album contains this many ballads, a hard rock band has the rare opportunity to amass a number of female fans rather than bank on the male audiences that support Puddle of Mudd, Nickelback, and other such groups. Unfortunately, Saving Abel's track list doesn't do this band any favors, although that certainly doesn't negate the co-ed appeal of "18 Days," "Beautiful Day," and "Sailed Away."
Customer Reviews
Not the most original, but its a fresh sound
Saving Abel has never claimed to be engineering a new wave of rock or bringing a new sound to the table. Their debut album instead is another injection of solid rock n' roll you might hear from your local bar's best band. In no way is that an insult because Saving Abel's debut album is a solid, kick in the butt to today's "emo-era" of rock. Today's age of "rock"; laden with grown men wearing eyeliner and woeful-my-daddy-never-loved-me-whining, Saving Abel is 5 everyday guys joining the ranks Nickelback, 3 Doors Down and Saliva of straight forward, powerful-yet-accessible rock n' roll.
The subjects on Saving Abel's debut album doesnt really expand outside of most rock n' roll cliches; sex, women, broken relationships, good & tough times. However, unlike the dumb-guy-rock and raspy throated Hinder, Saving Abel actually put some thought and heart into their music. The sound is very clean, yet has grinding old school rock feel. The hooks on the songs are undeniably catchy and will having you hitting repeat over and over.
This album has many great cuts on it, "New Tattoo" and "Addicted" lead off the album with sex-themed, guy-brovado rockers that are suitable for men or women. "Beautiful You" , "18 Days", "Drowning", "Out of My Face" and "Running from You" are the best representations of what Saving Abel has to offer; Solid riffs, easy-to-sing-along-with lyrics, and just solid music all around. What makes this album a 5-star, it offers up something for everyone and yet keeps its rock core. Saving Abel isnt going to impress you with originality, they don't quite match the powerful, thunderous sound of Nickelback, but they have alot more heart and talent than Hinder. Saving Abel's debut has an optimistic atmosphere on the album and enough good rock to keep you coming back for more.
Everyone's against good rock. Why?
They don't sound like Hinder, which is also a good band. Are you afraid that they'll become "sellouts?" What is a sellout. Oh yeah, a media corporate created word that was invented when Fergie came along. Or do you mean sellout by selling every damn CD in the store? Cause if you ask me, that's called good music.
very sexy album cover but...
this crap sound just like every other radio band these days.. WEAK SAUCE
