Album Review

When Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan covered Wings' "Silly Love Songs" as a guest vocalist for the Replicants, it was amusing and well thought out. When Tool covered "No Quarter" in concert it was intense, appropriate, and staggeringly good. And when Maynard continued the tradition with the beautiful recording of Failure's "The Nurse Who Loved Me," it became apparent that Maynard had a penchant for re-recording songs that were of high quality but not necessarily anthems. But then there's the notion of recording a whole album of covers, which immediately sends off red flags that the water may be running dry and the record label is thirsty for a new release. A Perfect Circle's album of covers, eMOTIVe, falls flat and fails to raise the bar set so high by the quality of their previous two releases. Turning some of popular music's most potent songs into a soundtrack ideal for background music at your local teen-angst mall-chain clothing store, A Perfect Circle work their way through 12 songs that would almost be unrecognizable in their current arrangement if one weren't familiar with the original versions of each song. John Lennon's somber, optimistic anthem for peace, "Imagine," is changed from its original major key to a funereal minor key dirge. Marvin Gaye's perfect "What's Going On" is turned into a horrible industrial track that would be permissible on a budget-line compilation but is simply unforgivable in its inclusion here. The same could apply to the butchering of Black Flag's "Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie" and a few other numbers. However, the album's sole moment of tranquility and its most effective moments lie in the band's treatment of Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks," and the disturbing a cappella of Joni Mitchell's "Fiddle and the Drum." eMOTIVe is a slight dent in the armor of Maynard's nearly flawless career as a frontman, and it's (hopefully) a mere detour for A Perfect Circle.

Complaining about Tool

those complaining about tool need to realize this-
Tool refuses to go to iTunes, because they still treasure the album buying experience. When you buy a Tool cd, you buy more than the music. If you own any of them, you know what i am talking about. The only Tool cd iTunes could do justice is the 4-5 track EP, Opiate. And even then, there would be a certain "I actually bought a Tool cd" element missing from the experience. Tool is an experience that iTunes simply cannot do justice.

I suggest being lyrical hardcore before byeing

I love this album for it's expression and hatred at war... well, that, and "Passive" and "Imagine" are amazing. I will admit, this isnt "Thirteenth step", it could be better. In fact, I really just dont suggest bying this full album unless you really like listening to dark, political music and lyrics. Most songs on here are ones that are more fun to trace their history than to listen to...

If you are light hearted and you're not hardcore into the whole "anti-emo" style, then I suggest you go buy "Mer De Noms" or "Thirteenth Step"... Or a Tool album... But if you really like A Perfect Circle, or just music in general, then this is something I wouldnt suggest skipping over. I suggest you add it to your collection.

Not Just Political Rhetoric

Now, let me make something clear. I am not interested in political music because it usually sounds like whining. However, this album is NOTHING like that. It is simply magnificent. Forget about the lyrics for a minute, the music is unbelieveable. Though many of the songs are covers. One listen and it would seem like a brand new song. To the person who said this album was emo: Have you listened to it yet? There is nothing emo about it. To people buying this album: The iTunes clips are a far cry from what the songs actually sound like. I haven't a clue as to why it's labeled explicit. Perhaps the lyrics have explicit truth? Maynard's voice is magical. He can go from a whisper, in Annihiliation, to a mid-pitch in Peace, Love and Understanding. Even if the lyrics aren't to your taste, the music should be. If you're simply looking at this album, stop. Don't look. Just buy.

Biography

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Formed by Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan and former Tool guitar tech Billy Howerdel, A Perfect Circle is an extension of the alt-metal-fused-with-art rock style popularized by Tool in the early to mid-'90s. While similar to Tool in intensity and melancholy, A Perfect Circle is less dark and more melodic,...
