iTunes Review

San Diego folksinger Tristan Prettyman mixes and matches well beyond the acoustic terrain that usually accompanies reflective songwriters. Hello, her 2008 follow-up to her 2005 debut twentythree, features coffeehouse funk beats (think Ani DiFranco), alt-country slide guitars (think Tift Merritt), and plenty of sassy nightclub jazz stylings (think Erin McKeown) to spice up these tales of self-empowerment, self-doubt, and woe. Between the spirited give and take of her backing band — plenty of keyboards to flesh out the sound — an orchestrated string section, and the careful productions of Sacha Skarbek and Martin Terefe (who worked similar tricks for Ron Sexsmith), Prettyman never spends too much time alone. Even her quietest moments (“You Got Me,” “Blindfold”) are subtly chaperoned by visiting musicians, while Prettyman’s pop instincts (“Hello,” “California Girl,” “Madly”) are given the full-body treatment and made for radio play. Prettyman’s hardly a wallflower herself. Her confident, no-nonsense vocals are resilient even in their most exposed moments.

Worth so much more then 5.99!

Such a great album!!! I highly recommend! There's a song on this album for every mood, and its so great to see Tristan getting some mainstream recognition as the free single of the week and on The Hills!! Overall, I like the more mature, refined sound she's captured on this new album, while still remaining true to her own style..

back and better than ever

i just saw a TP concert a few days ago, and got the chance to pre-listen this album before it came out and at first i was skeptical because i was used to the very mellow, low-key, and bare bones production of "twentythree" but the more i listen to this new album, the more i realize the subtleties that make this record a true picture of a growing artist. the songs are all varied, some with funky grooves and some as lilting and simple as her first record's. but all in all, "hello...x" shows maturity in songwriting, in lyrics, in guitar playing, and more. each songs suits a new mood but the album is still very cohesive. an excellent sophomore release, worth even more than itunes is asking. great album, great performer, great arist

Hello- 2008

This album is fantastic!
The songs are all soothing and peaceful, but keep the mainstream appeal. I had never been fond of this girl before, but I'm glad I found this, because I haven't heard any rock music this good from a female artist in quite some time. This girl will break out of her shell someday, and be the top female artist. Not as good as Christina or Mariah, but the vocals are pretty darn good. Beautiful album!
