iTunes Review

A word often used to describe music by Britain’s Hot Chip is “playful,” and while that applies on Made In the Dark, it’s hard to deny that the band’s creative flow has taken a more mature and finely honed turn. Yes, by all means put your dancing shoes on for “Ready for the Floor,” “Bendable Poseable,” and especially the six-minute-plus “Hold On,” but as you shuffle under the strobes, you won’t be able to shake the feeling that repeated listenings to these tracks will reveal new things, that there is more going on here than great dance music. Those bassy-synth lines and snappy drums, the sadly cheery falsetto of singer Alexis Taylor, the spirit of Human League and Orchestral Manoeuvers In the Dark are but the window dressing: there is something deeper Hot Chip strives for, like they’re trying to sneak into your very soul without you catching them. The band’s only misstep here is bringing the party down by working over the poor old ballad form. But several tracks go for a slightly more rock angle, with “Out At the Pictures” and “Shake a Fist” having a warmer, more human pulse and even some shy but well-placed guitars.

Disappointing

Hot Chip's last album was fantastic - groovy, catchy, orginal and fresh. This album falls way short and I'm so bummed. I just gave it another listen (as I have before) hoping that I had missed something the first time or not given it enough air time to catch on for me. Alas, I still think it is lame. It is was over produced. Rather than writing groovy beats and catchy melodies and lyrics, it seems like the band got lazy and tried a bunch of tired, 80s sounding production tricks and synth lines/sounds to make boring songs interesting. I reccomend you skips this album and try "The Warning." Also try Digitalism and LCD Soundsystem for similar but better sounds.

A brilliant fun album

I heard of Hot Chip through rolling stone and then I got it from a friend and the first time I listened to it I was at my horrible job but couldn't stop from dancing.

This is a catchy and clever album that brings smooth beats, catchy lyrics and a dance to any party.

This music probably isn't for everyone. I myself am not really into the hipster-electronic scene, but I was pleasantly surprised once I gave this album a chance. Some might be put off by some of the weirder songs (Bendable Poseable), but what's not to like about songs like Ready for the Floor, Wrestlers, and We're Looking For a Lot of Love? If you're not impressed on the first listen, give these songs a few listens and you're in for a great time. Highly recommended!
