iTunes Review

After the abstract tone poems of Kid A and Amnesiac, Radiohead returned to the studio in 2002 with the ambition to expand and modify their attack, re-embracing certain rock conventions while further exploring their music’s outer reaches. This 14-track collection reflects a post 9-11 world where bombs and totalitarian rule encroach on an obedient, often apathetic, public. “2+2=5,” taken straight from George Orwell, begins things with Yorke’s frustration at the surface. “Sit Down, Stand Up” continues this authoritarian mode with Yorke repeating his commanding orders in deliberate monotone. The group settles into imagistic musical terrain for “The Gloaming,” “Backdrifts,” and “We Suck Young Blood,” tunes that evoke horror with their spooky, hanging, suspended chords and atmospheric noises. “There There” uses layers of guitar feedback; “I Will” features an otherworldly duet, with Yorke’s falsetto tracing the melody with its ghostly presence; “A Punch-Up at a Wedding” sets its groove with a melodic bass line and a sweet Yorke melody that hides the violence of the moment. Radiohead find the balance between art and commerce with such natural ability that they make it seem easy.

The Best IMO

I had to really think about how all of the Radiohead albums match up because they're all very different, inspired by different things, and using different methodologies in the instrumentation and finesse with their instruments and subject matter. But when it comes down too it, this album far outshines the rest. Kid A and Amnesiac were the obvious departures from their alt/rock roots, but there's a feeling of insecurity with the sampling that makes those albums lack the maturity of "Hail to the Thief." These songs expand on the bands experimental elements but support the melodies that keep the songs lively even tho their lyrical content deal with controversy and disillusion with the world. Odd time signatures and unpredictable chord progressions keep this album vibrant from beginning to end. In fact, the first and last songs are my favourites, "2+2=5" and "Wolf at the Door." If you're only experience with Radiohead was the older poppy stuff, you might find this shocking, but in a good way. ;O) If you need to hear Snow Patrol or Coldplay, you might want to move on to safer things.

There, there now... this is a truly fabulous album.

Obviously by my name im a rap fan. But... i have listened to every single radio head album and they crossed me over. Every album they have made in my mind is perfect, but i enjoyed this one the most. It kind of reminds me of ok computer in that it sounds more like rock, not as experimental like Kid A. But i may be wrong, who cares though masterpiece.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Radiohead was one of the few alternative bands of the early '90s to draw heavily from the grandiose arena rock that characterized U2's early albums. But the band internalized that epic sweep, turning it inside out to tell tortured, twisted tales of angst and alienation. Vocalist Thom Yorke's pained lyrics...
