iTunes Review

There's something uniquely British about The Fratellis’ sound — perhaps it’s the soccer-anthem swagger that seems to inflate many of their songs, or maybe it’s the pub-flavored piano and wild, Pogues-style energy running throughout — and it certainly adds to their charm. (There is also an occasional Beatles-esque sound to the vocals of Jon Fratelli, especially when backed by drummer Mince Fratelli.) The opening track, “My Friend John,” opens with galloping bongos (!) that segue into ferocious, spaghetti-western guitars — whose genius idea was that? The song feels like jumping on a young, unbroken pony, and it ends too soon (check out a track by fellow Glaswegians, Sons and Daughters, called “Johnny Cash” for a similar ride). First single, “Mistress Mabel,” along with “A Heady Tale” and the gritty “Tell Me A Lie,” are boisterous and bawdy fun, while “Baby Doll” and “Lupe Brown” celebrate the Merseybeat sound. Album closer “Milk & Honey” is a wonderful surprise, morphing into an all-out rocker half way through, and the bonus track here, “Jesus Stole My Baby” is from the UK release of the album, and we’re lucky to have it; it’s one of the strongest tracks.

Where'd the party go?

I know, I know. It's unfair to take a shot at the Frat's for not sounding exactly like their first album but I just LOVED their first album. CM just felt spontaneous. Putting polish on that sound is like some analogy where you start with something hot and flaming and then add something to improve it but only end up taking away the hot and flaming. At least they've got one album I love which is more than I can say for most bands or people.

Better than the first

I first heard Chelsea Dagger and Flathead in a couple Ipod comercials and thought that they were pretty good. My brother eventually got the album and put it on in the car one day and I fell in love with the whole entire songs and a couple others on the album. When the Mistress Mabel single first came out, my brother played it and I wasnt exactly sure how I felt about it- silly me. After getting the full album I once again fell in love. I liked Here We Stand more than Costello Music. Now I have to admit that even though I rate both albums a 5 Star, I dont favor all the songs. Off of Costello Music I prefer Henrietta, Flathead, Whistle for the Choir, Chelsea Dagger, For the Girl, Creepin up the Backstairs, Everybody Knows You Cried Last Night, and Baby Fratelli. Off of Here We Stand I like My Friend John, A Heady Tale, Shameless, Look Out Sunshine!, Mistress Mabel, and Baby Doll. Even though there are many songs I dont like much, the one's I do like, I love and cant get enough of. The Fratellis are amazing and I wish that they would get more popular and eventually play during the Super Bowl- they would put on a great show

Years Active: '00s

A brashly melodic indie rock outfit from Glasgow, the Fratellis feature vocalist/guitarist Jon Fratelli, drummer Mince Fratelli, and bassist Barry Fratelli. The witty trio played its first show in early 2005, maintaining that the band's moniker was merely an homage to Barry's original surname (however,...
