iTunes Review

Adele Adkins was showered with critical huzzahs and walked away with an armful of awards after her hit debut album 19 appeared in the summer of 2008. Adele displays a formidable talent as a vocalist, underplaying her lines with insinuating feints and seductive shadings. There are elements of acoustic folk and coffeehouse jazz as well as R&B in these tracks, heard in airy, playful numbes like “Daydreamer” and “Crazy for You.” Adele’s delicately girlish vocal on “First Love” contrasts with her whiskey-dipped tones on “Right as Rain.” But what grabs the listener most are her soul queen moves, tossed off with a sultry flair that can be mesmerizing. The string-drenched “Cold Shoulder” and the brooding “Melt My Heart to Stone” show off her extraordinary subtlety and control. As for the ballads, they are all but impeccable — “Hometown Glory” and a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love” ache with inner fire. A-list producers Mark Ronson and Eg White help make 19 a sonically rich and variegate experience. But in the end, it’s Adele’s show, and she holds the spotlight with undeniable authority.

The first song I heard of Adele's was Chasing Pavements on SNL and I loved it, loved it, loved it! Couldn't believe the voice that came out of her mouth- it’s better than most. Upon seeing her perform, I went onto iTunes and purchased this entire album and found the quality and messages to be equally powerful as that first song. There is a song on here for everyone of every type, whether it be regarding message, theme, element, lyrics, tune, etc. Though the tempos and styles vary throughout the album, Adele's talent is by no means hidden. The catch? None. This British teen has not failed to impress anyone I've showed her work to, or anyone else who has heard her music. Three words describe this artist's tunes: unbelievable, memorable, and beautiful. My suggestion? Purchase this- it's very uplifting and you'll never mind listening to the same song repeatedly. It seems as if you get something new/more out of a song of hers every time you listen to it. Get your fill- it's worth it!

When the U.K. press began dubbing Adele "the next Amy Winehouse" in late 2007, the hype didn't touch upon the heavy singer/songwriter influence found in the Londoner's music. Influenced by Suzanne Vega as much as Jill Scott, Adele first made an impression in 2006 when she toured as an opening act for...
