iTunes Review
Coldplay's choice of U2 producer Brian Eno to oversee the majority of their fourth album, Vida la Vida, doesn’t alter their sound so much as refine it. Coldplay are a polite sounding group, eager with melody and attracted to smooth surfaces; the extra guitar shimmers and the elegantly programmed orchestrations are hardly a departure for them. Several tracks, including the title track and “Lovers in Japan,” veer closely to U2 territory, adopting their marching lope, hijacking their percussive yet ambient guitars, and swallowing up singer Chris Martin in a blur of reverb, but then Coldplay has often resembled a modest version of the Irish supergroup in their ambient ambitions. Martin's social conscience can be heard underneath the murky rock and hypnotic drones. “Violet Hill” explores his own mixed feelings towards violence, trying to discern what is necessary versus what is excessive. The title track is either calling for the end of the world or celebrating the end of an empire. Martin’s worldview may be filled with unsolvable paradoxes, but his band builds a commanding presence as the musical authority that drives “Yes,” “Life in Technicolor,” and the gorgeous “Lost!” makes clear.

I'm In The Light Now.
by Whiskey Train4000+ reviews on this album, and I'm guessing that no one will read this, but I want to set things straight. This is the third time I've written a review for Viva la Vida, the first bashing the album with no real support, the second praising it but offering little insight into the album itself. Like the very first review for this album states, it takes you a couple listens to fully appreciate Coldplay's utter genius and talent on Viva la Vida. As of the third listen to this album, I am even more impressed than the second time (the first utterly despising it). And, the third listen marks the time where I have listened to all other Coldplay albums, and of course, this is my favorite. Instead of the cold, clear sound like the previous three, this is warmer, and a bit more relaxed.
LIFE IN TECHNICOLOR: The instrumental introduction previews the listener to the new sound. Nothing special, but a good foretaste to the album. 7/10
CEMETERIES OF LONDON: It's got a dark, but not moody sound, slightly chilling. Strong electric guitar, and perhaps a very strong song. A personal favorite. 10/10
LOST!: A powerful, driving song from start to finish. Main instrument is an organ. Catchy, one you sway along to. 9/10
42: A very underrated track on the album. Starts off slowly and almost unappealingly, but gains power and contains good string and guitar instrumental. Unforgettable lyrics. 9/10
LOVERS IN JAPAN / REIGN OF LOVE: Part one is catchy, with beautiful guitars and vocals, but part two ruins it with slow tempo and basic vocals. 8/10 for part one, 6/10 for part two.
YES: A very good track, second best on the album. The strings instrumentals are driving, and Chris's lower vocals sound great. Chinese Sleep Chant is nothing to get too excited about, just a lot of guitar and no piano. 10/10
VIVA LA VIDA: No guitar, all strings. Very inventive lyrics, but can get old from hearing it on the radio every day. Good track, ruined slightly by popular demand. 9/10
VIOLET HILL: In my opinion, this is the track that's worth your money. The electric guitar is the most powerful thing about it, and the track overall is powerful. Best on the album as a favorite, but maybe not as an overall track. 10/10
STRAWBERRY SWING: For the third listen, this song has gotten my liking very much. The guitars are most noticeable, very...fun song, i suppose. 9/10
DEATH AND ALL HIS FRIENDS: Starts slow like 42, before ending with a bang (unless you count the escapist, which adds the Life In Technicolor instrumental as a fitting end to the album, but the hidden ending is the closest thing to filler on this album). Otherwise okay. 8/10
And so ends Coldplay's apparent greatest work. My favorite Coldplay album, but I'll let you decide that for yourself.
Leaves me speechless!
by WalkinOnSunshineSupermodelBI can't believe how amazing these songs are. Chris Martin has the voice of an angel. I am so happy for Coldplay and all of their success. Every song they've ever written is beautiful and heartfelt. This album is worth every cent.
Coldplay. Is. Awesome!
by GophersRule123I actually bought this album first, and then the previous coldplay albums. Now, coldplay is the only band I listen to! Great album from a great band-but get the Prospekts March Edition, which has some more awesome songs like Glass of Water, Prospekts march, etc.
