iTunes Review

Shout At the Devil is the album that broke Motley Crue to the big time, inflating their seething street-level riffs to stadium rock proportions. The title track was a calling card for the new Crue. A fist-pumping anthem driven by Tommy Lee’s thunderous drums, the song freely courts the satanic associations that would begin to mar heavy metal in the mid-Eighties. “Red Hot” and “Knock ‘Em Dead” return the band to the high-velocity rock of Too Fast For Love, even though the songs are slightly less developed this time around. With its churning groove and creepy-yet-infectious hook, “Looks That Kill” is the album’s undeniable centerpiece — check out the demo version for an even rawer take on this Crue classic. At least as important as the music is the album cover itself, a take-off on the Beatles’ Let It Be that captures the band members in all their painted glory. Even if the band had not quite found the hook-heavy songwriting style that would blow them up in the years to come, Shout At the Devil crystallizes the image and attitude that would turn Motley Crue into heavy metal superstars.

Last good Crue album.

This one and Too Fast For Love are the only Crue worth owning. After this album, they changed their sound and joined the Cinderella style of hair metal. Their early stuff is edgy and raw, and back in the mid-80's it seemed just a bit dangerous. Once they started cranking out ballads like Home Sweet Home, it was just embarassing.

This is a great album of musical composion. As many of the songs are still played a lot, it shows how timeless they are, and how timless they're music is.

Motley Crue/Shout At The Devil

One of the few albums that I can listen to from start to finish. Most albums have one or two great songs and the rest is a complete waste of money. This, so far, is the only complete album that I've purchased from iTunes. I drive a 1986 El Camino and one cannot properly cruise without blasting tunes to match the vintage! Had the cassette many years ago but totally wore it out with so much use! I'm an old headbanger who graduated from high school the year this came out and this has been one of my absolute favorites for the last 26 years.

Mötley Crüe were one of the most influential hair metal bands of the '80s, boasting a striking visual presence and hedonistic reputation rivaled only by Guns N' Roses. By combining Alice Cooper's shock rock with the bluesy, metallic stomp of the New York Dolls and Aerosmith, they helped establish hair...
