iTunes Review

Despite the high quality of their releases, Third Day has never truly parlayed its Christian music stardom into secular mainstream success. Revelation deserves to be Georgia foursome’s ticket to wider acceptance. Producer Howard Benson (P.O.D., Daughtry) emphasizes the crunch factor in Mark Lee’s guitar work and brings out the backwoods growl in Mac Powell’s vocals. Songs like “Call My Name” and “This is Who I Am” are as aggressive sonically as they are fervent lyrically. “Otherside” and “Ready” slink and strut towards salvation, while “I Will Always Be True” and “Give Love” sing God’s praises with a folk-rock bounce. Themes of spiritual surrender and rebirth reoccur throughout the album, concluding with the quietly intense “Take it All.” Powell’s prophetic vocal persona manages to combine authority with humility, an impressive achievement for any rock singer, Christian or otherwise. Several guest stars — particularly Flyleaf singer Lacey Mosley and pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph — enhance key tracks. Revelation’s excellence won’t surprise long-time fans. For new listeners, though, this reverent slice of down-home rock should be an eye-opener.
