Album Review

Renegades of Funk, released in 2005, is 2000's Soul of Rasta — also released by the Newhouse label — in expanded form. The earlier set was a perfectly adequate anthology of Cymande's three '70s albums, but this one adds a pair of "unreleased bonus tracks" (the poor "Trevorgus" and the decent "Bird"), in addition to album cut "Zion I." If you want the whole picture, there's the Sequel (U.K.) release The Message, which combines the band's three albums onto two discs, but this 16-track disc does contain most of the essentials ("Bra," "The Message," "Dove," "Brothers on the Slide").

Unless having a really, really good time is against your religion, you need this album in your life. Cymande were architects of basslines, carpenters of funk. Has an almost Carribean/Afrobeat feeling to a lot of it, with some sunny soul supporting the beat.

This is a great album that is sampled by tons of hip hop acts from the late 80s early 90s. I was doing some carpentry one night with some friends and they played this album. I found myself grooving along knowing most of the songs from the samples I had heard before. This is the unfiltered source, and a must have. enjoy

One of my favorite albums ever. From top to bottom the whole thing just grooves. Don't just buy one song... buy the whole album if you can, it is worth it.

Biography

Formed: West Indies

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '70s

Although underappreciated and woefully overlooked during their original tenure together, the fine early-'70s outfit Cymande (pronounced Sah-mahn-day) was one of the first to merge African rhythms with rock, funk, reggae, and soul. Comprised of members who hailed from such exotic locales as Guyana, Jamaica,...
