The END of Falling Up? Sadly, nothing new here...

I was shocked to see this. It's a very ominous sign to see a greatest hits package just nine months after Captiva (especially for a band whose entire catalog features just 3 proper releases over four years). That, coupled with Jessy and Josh's new "side" project The River Empires, makes it seem like this might be the end of Falling Up, and this is just BEC/Tooth and Nail trying to capitalize on the lingering buzz from Captiva ("Goodnight Gravity" just went Top 10 on R&R's Rock chart, and "Planetarium" is still rising on CHR).

As for the greatest hits package itself, it feels very rushed. (I've never seen a "Greatest Hits" set released while two singles are still active). There is not a single note of new material here: all of the tracks are pulled directly from Falling Up's four CDs. And at just 52-minutes, the disc isn't even full. Surprised that "Maps" isn't included, or the original versions of "Exit Calypsan" and "Searchlights" (the remixed versions of these songs from the Exit Lights remix CD are featured instead--a nice touch, but there is definitely room for the originals as well). Some B-sides or live tracks would have been a nice addition to this set, but there are none to be found.

There are certainly some great songs here. For those new to Falling Up, this disc will serve as great introduction to the band's guitar-driven rock, experimental sonic landscapes, and artful lyricism. But for Falling Up's fan base, this set contains nothing that hasn't been featured on the band's prior releases, so there's not much reason to invest in this disc. And if 2008 does indeed mark the end of Falling Up, this compilation is a rushed and sadly deficient tribute to their legacy.

Falling Up = Amazing

Ive been listening to this band for the last couple of years and already own all of this music, but let me tell you this is REALLY REALLY GOOD STUFF and to anyone who doesnt have any of these songs needs to at least get escalates and broken heart but should definetly look into the other songs too cause theyre really good too

Nice Work!

Never heard of this band...what a pleasant surprise. Great songs!!

Biography

Formed: 2000 in Albany, OR

Genre: Christian & Gospel

Years Active: '00s

Christian metal act Falling Up is in many ways a protégé of the better-known group Kutless: members of the two bands grew up together in the Portland suburb of Albany, OR, and the more established band initially brought Falling Up to the attention of both their label, BEC Recordings, and their initial producer, established CCM artist Aaron Sprinkle. But where Kutless is a fairly standard-issue Christian gloss on metal-tinged emo, Falling Up has a more chart-oriented sound with strong electronica...
