iTunes Review

The return of Randy Travis to secular country music has to be considered a bona fide event. Yet part of the charm of Around the Bend, the singer’s first non-gospel album in nine years, is its deliberately low-key quality. Producer Kyle Lehning harkens back to his work with Travis two decades ago for inspiration, then strips away extraneous pop elements (except for strings) to reveal the traditional structures beneath. Travis retains the endearing vocal mannerisms of his early records — the pinched highs and grumbling lows are all here. What’s added is a sense of wisdom and forgiveness in his delivery, as well as greater comic timing. (Check out his rendering of the droll “Everything That I Own (Has Got a Dent)” for proof.) Travis’ deeply-held Christian beliefs lend a patina of spiritual love to good-humored tunes like “Every Head Bowed” and “From Your Knees” as well as reverent ballads like “Faith in You.” The album’s sound is crisp and uncluttered, with song like “Turn it Around” and the title tune ambling along to sparkling acoustic guitars. Around the Bend is a quietly masterful work by an artist who has made the transition from young hunk into gentlemanly sage.

Childhood memories

by redanimalwar

Like many others, I did not have a particularly wonderful childhood, me and my father always butted heads, but their was this one family roadtrip to Colorado from Dallas where we took an R/V that looked more like a tour bus, and we listened to Randy Travis's "Deeper than the holler" album the whole way there. For once we had all bonded and we truly had fun.
This is one of a handful of times when my family 'w/my Dad involved in which we truly had fun.
So thank you Mr. Travis, your music that week along with a few other things, gave me and the rest of my family a truly heartfelt memory, with never happens with us. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much.

Thank you,

Another Great Album From Randy

What a great return to country for Randy! I have to say that the best song on there is "You Didn't Have A Good Time", what a moving song. "Love Is A Gamble" and "Dig Two Graves" are also great songs. He could sing anything, even rap, and I would love it. The best album of the year!

Biography

Born: May 04, 1959 in Marshville, NC

Genre: Country

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Like the Beatles in rock, Randy Travis marks a generational shift in country music. When his Storms of Life came out in 1986, country music was still wallowing in the post-urban cowboy recession, chasing elusive crossover dreams. Travis brought the music back to its basics, sounding like nothing so much...
