iTunes Review

Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox has established himself as a critical part of the indie-rock scene. His music is unpredictable and sometimes challenging, but even in his most experimental moments there is a vulnerable human-ness that makes it accessible. Microcastle puts Cox and his band firmly on the path to producing cohesive songs with beginnings, middles and ends, and they’re not just songs with all the right parts; they’re astoundingly accessible and memorable to boot. Guitarist Lockett Pundt’s contributions — on vocals as well — are a real plus, and from the lulling “Agoraphobia” to the ‘60s pop charm of “Little Kids” and “Saved by Old Times,” Microcastle offers plenty of well above-average indie pop. Cotton-candy shoegazer “Never Stops” has a sad, lyrical feel, and “Calvary Scars” and “Activa” are wrapped in the ambient twinkle of Cox’s solo work as Atlas Sound. The gloriously dreamy “Neither of Us, Uncertainly,” and the Yo La Tengo-ish “Nothing Ever Happened” are strong contenders for Best of Show, but we give the award to the purely Deerhunter “Microcastle” which fools us all for the first two minutes with its airy, twee weightlessness before morphing into a sonic tsunami.

Deerhunter. Is. God.

Cover Me Slowly- A good start to Microcastle. Very slow, deep, and emotional. Sounds like a cut from the early Pink Floyd.
Agoraphobia- Best song on the album. The chords are ingenious, the guitars are beautiful, and the vocals are ultimately mesmorizing. Will ease even the most violent and restless souls.
Never Stops- Very poppy. The chorus is gorgeous.
Little Kids- A quirky song. I like it though.
Microcastle- Starts off with just Brad singing and playing guitar as a slow ballad. All of the sudden, you are plunged into a deep ocean of guitar ambience. Best song on the album (besides Agoraphobia, of course).
Calvary Scars- A very slow, mournful song. Serves as the beginning of what I call the "intermission" of the album (Calvary Scars, Green Jacket, Activa).
Green Jacket- A lot like Calvary Scars. I like Green Jacket better though.
Activa- A rather eery, tension-filled song. The end of the "intermission".
Nothing Ever Happened- This is the 'hit' on Microcastle. It really doesn't sound that much like Deerhunter, but more like Tokyo Police Club or something. The build at the end is fantastic.
Saved By Old Times- A fun, bluesy, jam. The riff can be kinda annoying though.
Neither of Us, Uncertainly- Don't know what to think about this song. I'd say it's the weakest song on the album. It can be rather boring.
Twilight At Carbon Lake- Starts off as an eery lament. Ends with a soaring chorus drenched in distorted guitars. Wonderful.

Key songs: Agoraphobia, Never Stops, Microcastle, Twilight At Carbon Lake.

I have dreams
That frighten me awake
I happen to escape
But my escape
Will never come

I can so relate. Sigh...

Biography

Formed: 2001 in Atlanta, GA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

Deerhunter is an experimental noise rock band from Atlanta, fronted by the compellingly odd singer Bradford Cox. Cox's vocal style blends vocal experimentation along the lines of Meredith Monk or Yoko Ono with a more direct and punky howl inspired by the Fall's Mark E. Smith. Cox is also a striking on-stage...
