iTunes Review

A master of the 1960s-1970s countrypolitan sound that mixed country music’s traditional approach with pop instrumentation, Glen Campbell is the perfect country artist to interpret folk, rock and pop songs such as Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” Travis’ “Sing,” and the Foo Fighters’ “Times Like These.” While Johnny Cash worked with producer Rick Rubin to strip modern rock songs down to their essentials, Campbell uses a team of producers to flesh these songs out with lush backing that occasionally hints at the orchestrated-string tension of his best work (“Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston”). Jackson Browne’s “These Days” retains its poignancy. Paul Westerberg’s “Sadly Beautiful” is delivered as a timeless ballad. The Velvet Underground’s “Jesus” becomes a country standard, while Tom Petty’s “Walls” and “Angel Dream” benefit from Campbell’s warm, sincere delivery. There isn’t a misstep here. Just quality songs delivered by a true entertainment professional who never settles for irony. U2’s “All I Want is You” sounds as if it were written for Campbell. John Lennon’s “Grow Old With Me” resounds as the closing hymn that Lennon had always envisioned.

Meet Glen Campbell

This album will take its place as one of Campbell's finest. At first glance, some of the songs seemed to be a strange choice for a Glen Campbell album. However, that feeling left me in a hurry after the first listening. Producer Julian Raymond deserves kudos for coaxing Campbell out of semi-retirement and into the recording studio. Every one of these songs sounds perfectly at home with Campbell's vocals wrapped around them. "These Days" should become an instant classic. Other standout cuts are "Walls," "Times Like These" "Sadly Beautiful" and "All I Want is You." The arrangements and production on several tracks are reminiscent of some of Campbell's earlier work like "Galveston" and "Wichita Lineman." A truly artistic effort!!!

Wow!

Sensational effort by one of the great voices in pop music history. Campbell turns the word "cover" on it's head by making many of these songs his own. Standouts are the Travis tune "Sing" that kicks off the album, Jackson Browne's "These Days", and Green Day's "Good Riddance." Glen's best album since the Jimmy Webb collaboration, Reunion.

reminded me that I love glen campbell

I knew the history: Wrecking Crew studio musician, Brian-Wilson stand-in, Capitol Records superstar, musician's musician, TV star, man with controlled substance issues, etc. I just forgot how clear and earnestly he plays and sings. As I listen to the songs, Glen's versions are all Glen and not Foo Fighters, Velvets, Tom Petty. Someone complained about the "overproduction" of these songs; go back and listen to Galveston and Wichita Lineman and hear the complex production in them. This is no different: full but not unnecessary. If you had told me that my favorite albums of 2008 would be Glen Campbell and Neil Diamond, I would have wondered about you. Now I wonder about me.

It isn't accurate to call Glen Campbell "pure country," but his smooth fusion of country mannerisms and pop melodies and production techniques made him one of the most popular country musicians of the late '60s and '70s. Campbell was one of the leading figures of country-pop during that era, racking up a steady stream of Top Ten singles, highlighted by classics like "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "I Wanna Live," "Wichita Lineman," "Galveston," "Rhinestone Cowboy," and "Southern Nights."
